What John Allen dislikes about The Alice May:
The atmosphere was fantastic and the service was excellent. Unfortunately, the main dishes (lamb shanks and spare ribs) were quite disappointing. Given the price, the food felt like average pub fare. However, the dessert was delightful—especially the apple and blackberry pie. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: NZ$50–60 Food: 2 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 View all feedback.
Alice May is an absolute must when exploring NZ 's west coast. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere with a delicious menu to choose from. I would highly recommend the tender 'melt in your mouth ' beef cheeks! Can 't wait to go back!
We spent only one night in Franz Josef and Alice May was the only restaurant we dined in for dinner, therefore it would not be fair to say it was the best in town, but it was definitely a very good restaurant with fair prices. Service was friendly and portion was good. Read the Alice May story, drink the Alice May ale while waiting for your food.
I typically don't eat eggs, but I ordered the whitebait omelette, and it turned out to be one of the best dishes I've had throughout my trip. It was incredibly rich and cheesy, yet light and fluffy at the same time. The garlic bread was fantastic as well. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. To elevate the dish even further, I suggest swapping the aioli for the mushroom and bacon sauce.
Take your appetite and DEFINITELY get dessert. The sticky toffee pudding could not be faulted. Apple and blackberry pie was also delicious. Unfortunately my pasta was a bit undercooked, so couldn't give food a 5 star. The prawns were perfection though! A fascinating story behind the name of the restaurant which made for interesting reading and table conversation.
A very cosy restaurant in Franz Josef. I enjoyed the braised beef cheeks and Pavlova for dessert. The staff are enthusiastic and friendly.
