Haoke chinese seafood restaurant

Best Yum Cha in Brisbane! We turned up to this restaurant at lunch time on Sunday and it was full and there was a seemingly endless queue.

Another opportunity to get selective and snobby about being lucky enough to have eaten some top yum cha (and some very bad dim sum!) around the world over the last 30-odd years. OK, no - not really - the thing is Haoke is really very average in terms of quality but midrange in terms of pricing. I had one portion each of har gau, siu mai and a charsiu cheung fan (rice roll). The har gau, 4 in a portion, were bland, decent texture, but mass produced supermarket fare. The siu mai (again 4 in a serve) meat had no consistency other than rubbery - I like to be able to enjoy the soft against the chewy, and there was no evidence of shredded shiitake to give a deep smoky 'shroomy contrast I'm used to - quite disappointing really. Considering that this place is so close to some of the best fresh roasted char siu in Brisbane I was miffed again when the meat in the cheung fan lacked the classic garlic-sweet roast hint of five spice aromatic - or sweet roast juices blended with soy dribbled over them... This is easy HK style kitchen rules here - or should be. I came to the conclusion that with so many locals here - families - friends - it's just one of those places where convenience and familiarity 'sticking with what mum & dad have always liked' wins the day. I wouldn't go out of my way especially to visit again - there's simply too much more to tempt me 5 mins away in central Sunnybank... and cheaper there too. For those three items my bill came to AUD$19... which means this is dim sum mid-range $ eats in my book. Quality could be a lot better - service was fine.

I read a lot of bad reviews for this place, if you are after the food, its hard to even fault any dish. Most people complain its not good and they probably dont even know whats authentic. I admit service is very bad but the yumcha served is the most authentic you can get around here. Most yumcha places caters for locals flavours while this one remains to the original ways. We came to Haoke for a catch up before my friend's mother returned to China. The first thing I noticed were the massive fish tanks close to the entrance full of fish, huge lobsters and king crabs. Next was the size of the dining room - big. I really liked the low-key but beautiful chandeliers. The chairs were heavy, so I felt very secure not sitting in a flimsy, plastic chair, which seems to be the norm. I suppose these are the things that make this place a restaurant and not a cafe. The service was efficient and attentive, with plenty of staff and plenty of smiles. We ordered a special banquet, which came with shark fin soup, entree (with jellyfish, roast pork, baby octopus and something else I can't remember), Chinese vegetables, oysters, crispy chicken, lobster in a bed of soft noodles, steamed fish, stir-fried scallops with vegetables, fresh fruits and a Chinese dessert with water chestnuts. Everything was yummy.
