We jumped off the new superstrada wanting to have a simple lunch and wanting to help the local merchants who are located on the old road that 's been eclipsed by the new Marche/Umbria Superstrada. We chose the mixed legume soup from three soup offerings and a couple of homemade pastas. We were pleasantly surprised when these giant steaming bowls of homemade soup arrived! We supplemented this with a platter of mixed local cheeses. Nona Bale is really three things...there 's the restaurant section, super casual and adorably decorated...there 's the take out and sandwich counter...and, there 's the store, selling amazing local legumes, meats, cheeses, homemade pastas, local (excellent) wines and lots more. We left with a bag FULL of goodies. Note that they 're open for breakfast and lunch, plus dinner BY RESERVATION ONLY. Great stop along the road. If you live in Le Marche, you 're there in just minutes via the new SS77 and if you live anywhere in Umbria near Perugia, Nonna Bale is really close. Kudos as well to our waitress, Luana, with her blue hair and very hip shoes, she was a pleasure...sincere, attentive and welcoming! So, get on the superstrada and get off at Colfiorito and enjoy a great LOCAL FOOD experience. We making a point to come back soon!
I have driven through this tiny town a number of times and it was time to stop for lunch. A pleasant surprise greeted us with a wonderful showcase with a large variety of local cheeses, meats and delicacies. We sat down to a fresh porchetta panino and after lunch left with half the store. The pecorino cheese is superb. The 'fresco ' cheese is smooth and creamy with a very distinct flavor that can only be described as delicious. If you are a fan of pecorino cheese, it is a stop you should make. The 3-year aged rounds were aromatic and a sample convinced us that it would be a sin to not leave with a wedge of every type that was in the display. An Italian specialty, Ciauscolo, is a variety of Italian salame, typical of the Marche region and is another addition to your shopping bag. It should not be missed. Chatting it up with the wonderful owner of this gem, we discovered all product in her establishment was theirs, including the delightful pastries and cookies that adorned many of the shelves. I will leave it to your imagination and let your tastebuds decide.
