Steak was not good- burnt and bad flavor. Gnocchi was good. Wouldn’t return though much better food elsewhere!
Well, the kindest review I could leave would end after simply calling this a disappointment however, in this case a small description as to why is in order. Upon entry we were “greeted” not exactly what I would describe as a friendly encounter, however we were shown to our seats. Now, we were sat at 8pm and the restaurant at the time was close to empty and our party of 2 were sat on a table which was in essence a table of 4 with another couple already sat. Immediately this felt slightly awkward, a feeling mirrored by this other couple who then sat silently. Granted, this was not the biggest of issues so allow me to describe the food. When it came to ordering we had an older gentleman take our order with a slight sense of aggression, where we got ourselves some starters and then went straight to the bistecca. The starters were acceptable I suppose, neither terrible nor great I do however think it quite possible for the average person to make something of equal quality at home without significant effort. When considering the pricing and the rhetoric surrounding this establishment, I would have expected to start with something significantly better. Alas, again this was not the be all and end all, after all, we came here for the bistecca. So, our absolute mammoth bistecca came out and the presentation was admittedly excellent however that’s where the good ends. We began eating our bistecca and immediately it was clear the cooking of it had been interesting whilst cooked to its raw perfection in spots, these spots were difficult to find and the rest of the steak varied in how it was cooked. Now I know this steak should receive minimal cook time so rendering fat can be difficult, but the fat was not even remotely rendered. This was compounded with gristle throughout the steak and a general chewiness not expected. Ultimately, anyone coming here is coming for the bistecca and I’m sure like me you’re expecting to be blown away I promise you this will be the most forgettable steak of your life, this experience is only memorable for negative to be reasons. I will quickly also mention our sides because I don’t want to omit what was good about this meal. The roast potatoes were truly delectable, the best part of the meal by miles. The only part of the meal which was enjoyable. Granted we also got the spinach which continued with letting us down. My best description of this is that they had simply sautéed the spinach, with no presence of any type of flavour. This resulted in a wilted clumpy mass of spinach which merely tasted exactly like spinach.
Known as the oldest restaurants in Florence, people come here for the ambience and the steak. From the second I entered, I had top-notch service by the owner and my waiter. The sage gnocchi is to die for. I also had the florentine steak for one, which is A LOT but worth it! The ambience here is great too, I wish they had some quiet music playing in the background though, it was very quiet when it had opened at 7 pm and people started dining.
