Description

Nestled near the picturesque Hamble River, this historic pub offers a mixed culinary experience. While some guests rave about the generous portions and delightful dishes like the grilled gammon and tender sirloin steak, others have encountered disappointing meals, particularly with the Sunday roast. Service generally receives praise for being friendly and attentive, although some diners noted lapses in checking on their satisfaction. The inviting atmosphere complements the pub's traditional charm, making it a decent choice for casual dining. With ample parking and good beer selections, it’s worth a visit, but be prepared for potential inconsistencies in meal quality.

We visited a traditional and historic pub with fantastic food. It was a Sunday evening and we decided to try this pub, which was a favorite spot of an old friend. The service was friendly, the beer was good, and the food was excellent. While the prices may have been a bit high for a pub, it was definitely worth it. The breaded mushrooms and whitebait starters were plentiful and delicious. The grilled gammon was also a hit, disappearing quickly. My sirloin steak was one of the best I've ever had – tender, succulent, and cooked perfectly to my liking, slightly rare. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't finish all of the delicious chips. Paired with a couple pints of George Gale's 'Seafarers' bitter, it made for a delightful evening. I would definitely return if in the area.

One unique aspect of the Old Ship is the mix of open seating on the ground level and the charming central bar that leads to a lower level with even more cozy seating below. The occasional roaring fire adds a cozy warmth to the atmosphere of this historic tavern. The place has a friendly vibe and a traditional presentation that we really enjoyed. While we appreciated the atmosphere and quality of the food and drinks, we did notice that the staff could have been more attentive and proactive in delivering our meals. Additionally, one of the seats my wife sat on was dirty, likely from previous canine visitors. Despite these minor issues, we had a great experience and plan to return soon.
