What Alex Beley doesn't like about Red Stag:
Booked through firsttable to be told 2h before arriving that chef is sick. Booked again one week later and showed up to a closed place. No signs, no communication. Place seemed out of business and a lot of mess lying around. View all feedback.
Nice decoration and atmosphere, this restaurant is like a pearl in the path to Mount Cook. We were well welcomed by the owners and it really feels home. We like the concept where you can have an aperitif at the lounge before entering the dining room for the foods degustation. With my wife we came here for her birthday, I chose the venison and she chose the lamb. As dessert I chose a double brownie and she chose a chocolate mousse. It was just delicious. I strongly recommend this restaurant if you stop at Fairlie or if you just pass by!
The food here is fantastic! We got the whitebait fritter to start which is very tender with no fish flavor at all, tis very tasty. Then had the pork belly and eye fritters for mains. Both of these were amazing with great flavor and texture. The ginger date sticky toffee pudding was such a delight and capped off the whole meal wonderfully. The wine selection was quite good and they helped us discover some great wines both white and red.
Great atmosphere and unexpectedly large and nice for such a small town. the restaurant is in a beautiful old house, has great service and delicious food. it feels a bit like a lodge with animal heads on the wall and pictures of the surrounding areas with hunters. also, my partner is vegetarian and they had 3 or 4 options instead of the usual vegetarian pizza or portobello sandwich we encountered at every other new zealand restaurant. they don't have a website, but you can see their menu on their Facebook page: [hidden link]
Such a lovely venue, fantastic hospitality and awesome food! Very family friendly and the highlight for my kiddies was having 'Zekey ' to play with!...
