Reviews - Onami
Reviews summary
Nestled in an unassuming location, this sushi café offers a mixed dining experience that garners both praise and criticism. While some patrons rave about the delightful sushi and standout dishes like chicken katsu curry, others have encountered frustrating customer service incidents and disappointing food quality. The ambiance may not be remarkable, but the café aims to impress with reasonable prices and a commitment to quality. Despite inconsistency in service and offerings, many visitors appreciate the delicious food and warm atmosphere. Ultimately, the café remains a budding gem in the local food scene worth exploring—if you can overlook a few bumps along the way.

I'm not experienced with Japanese food, but I love Sashimi. This is the best I've had, great variety and always really fresh and tasty. I'm working my way though the menu and learning as I go what else Japanese cuisine has to offer, so far...I've been delighted! View all feedback.
What Anonym dislikes about Onami:
I spent £35 on a meal from this restaurant, but when I arrived to pick it up, it wasn't ready and only one person was working and talking on the phone. I ordered 2 bowls of ramen, sushi, and seafood domburi, but had to wait 25 minutes. When I finally got home and opened the food, it was disgusting. The ramen had a strange old taste and I had to throw it away. The seafood domburi was missing and instead I had soggy fr... View all feedback.

We made a lunch booking for 4 having researched on TA what was available in the area as we were visiting from 150 miles away. We accidentally drove past the restaurant as it looked like a small Café, we decided to try it anyway and without question had some of the best Sushi we'd ever had, and we have been to some really famous Sushi restaurants. Please don't be put off by the location and style of building just sit down and enjoy truly fantastic food and a warm welcome from the owner Fon.
Ok so the location is not so great and ok the ambience is just so so ... BUT . The food is pretty amazing . Order the lunch box ... Wait a while and wow awesome.:. Take out is also an option
Former head chef of Nobu Mayfair now runs this place. What a stroke of luck to have it at the end of my street.Onami offers a good, extensive menu which is all cooked to perfection and all the favourites are there. We can easily spend £30 on a takeaway from Onami. They operate from a rather unprepossessing cafe style small building but do NOT let this put you off.
This place is awesome, the owner is so lovely and highly skilled he makes incredible sushi, really tasty and for a reasonable price! Definitely worth a visit. You can sit inside (if you're a group of less than 4) or just order it to take away.
After being recommend by a friend, we have been going to this local Japanese restaurant for over 6 months, the Sushi is always fresh, the rolls are made to order and not stored in a fridge beforehand. If you have time, try the Tempura prawns fresh by eating in the restaurant. It is much better then takeaway as it is cooked to order. As the chef/ owner his name is Fung) used to work at some of the top Japanese restaurants in London, he will also serve some of their signature dishes, like Blackcod in miso £18 a portion instead of £45 in London) and Yellowtail with Jalapeño. For the adventurous eater, try the thin cut Octopus with dried Soy sauce crystals. We have never had a bad meal here.

If I could give zero stars, I would. I experienced the worst customer service ever at this restaurant. The food was okay, nothing special and overpriced. I spent almost £30 and received a small portion of wasabi and soy sauce. When I asked for more after paying, I was told I would have to pay extra in cash as it was under their card limit. I only had one card with me that I used to pay for the main order. At this point, the chef lost his temper and started yelling at me, even calling me names when I refused to accept his dishonesty. Why should I have to pay an extra £1.50 after already spending £28? I will never dine at this establishment again and advise others to steer clear. Clearly, good customer service is not on the menu here!

Had a takeaway with a few of my friends. firstly im not a hug fan of sushi, but my friends are. i must say they are mainly use to eating sushi in top end restaurants, and i myself only eat sushi in Roka, nobu and...the likes, so i was dubious to order from here. we ordered on a Saturday night and had a very long wait which you grow accustom to when eating out or getting a takeaway in loughton on Saturday. i just fault the taste of the food was severely lacking, the teriyaki dishes tastes far to sweet and sickly, and the chicken katsu was a big disappointment. a shame as i had heard good things from a few friends, maybe i caught them on an off nigh, highly doubt ill be returning to find out.

The ramen had a strange old taste and I had to throw it away. The seafood domburi was missing and instead I had soggy fried fish. The only thing worth eating were the sushi rolls, but even the salmon sushi was not fresh. Such a waste of money and time.
I wish I could give zero stars, that's how bad my experience was at this restaurant. The food was awful - the avocado in the sushi was bad, the sweet fried rice was more like plain boiled rice with carrots, and the dumplings were burnt. When I tried to complain, the person I spoke to couldn't even communicate in English properly, making it seem like nobody cared about my feedback. I will definitely not be coming back here again.
