I had the ple... read more Kai Gourmet is a seafood retailer that hosts a pop-up sale every Friday morning, offering high-quality seafood from their warehouse in El Segundo. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner through a business event, and he introduced me to the New Zealand Ora King Salmon, which is flown in overnight. This particular salmon is often referred to as the Rolls Royce of seafood and is served in upscale restaurants throughout Southern California. I also picked up some pre-cut salmon in a container, along with seaweed and poke sauce, so I could make a homemade poke bowl at a reasonable price. The pop-up sale is well-organized and quite popular among locals, so I recommend arriving early to avoid long lines.

I've tried it many times, and the Saku blocks are my favorite—they're a fantastic deal for enjoying premium sashimi in the comfort of your own home. I've also sampled various other types of fish, including Ora King and Barramundi. The crab meat is exceptional and perfect for dips or chowder, and the lobster tails are a treat as well. I absolutely love this place and have recommended it to everyone I know. They host a Friday pop-up event, but you can also order online for a wider selection. The pop-up usually features a curated range of items on sale. Oh, and I can’t forget to mention that the shrimp is fantastic for shrimp cocktails!

Their sashimi... read more I’m so glad I discovered Kai Gourmet during the COVID-19 pandemic, as they offer fresh and delicious sushi-grade fish delivered right to my door! Their sashimi blocks are incredibly fresh, and the quality of the fish is outstanding. While it may not rival Sugarfish or Sushi Dai in Tokyo, it’s definitely on par with many excellent Japanese restaurants in the U.S. The black cod, which I prepared as miso-glazed, was buttery and fresh, while the hamachi toro quickly became one of my favorites—though it's quite rare and I've only managed to order it once. Their salmon is also fantastic, and I especially appreciate the Hokkaido scallops imported from Japan. The Kizami wasabi, with its fresh pieces of horseradish, pairs beautifully with the sushi. I look forward to exploring more of their offerings, though every time I check for the o-toro (even on Wednesdays through Saturdays), it seems to be sold out. I hope to try it one day! I’m also interested in sampling some of their non-sushi and meat dishes in the future. Plus, the customer service is excellent!
