Was Anonym at Nightjar a mag?
I knew the password but I went in seeing if they would even ask. It was a Thursday afternoon and they had a jazz band playing. I walked right in which is smart from a management perspective because people with cash should not be turned away if 80% of your seats are empty. Being in a basement is probably also a challenge. The place is not too big, but I had no sense of what it might be like on a weekend night with DJ's. The local beer on tap was actually cheap and the fancy drinks were out of my price range but maybe in line with the crowd who would order them. The food on the menu was a little pricey but it was also the kind for people that like going to places with passwords.
They say you can only get in with the password but when it is slow they will not turn away people with money. It is a small basement place with live jazz on Thursdays. I did not witness the weekend scene. The food is upper scale with tartare for example. The draft beers were reasonably priced and the cocktails were what you would expect for such a place.
I think Nightjar is Edmonton's first official speakeasy bar, although I'm not entirely convinced it fits the traditional definition of a speakeasy.
I discovered this hidden gem over the weekend while celebrating a birthday with my friends.
