Feedback
Select Restaurant in Edmonton offers an "international" cuisine, but mainly focuses on Indian dishes. The tandoori chicken and chicken biryani were found to be lackluster, although the tomato soup was outstanding. Some menu items were unavailable, including desserts. The ambience is lovely, and the staff is nice, but overall falls short as a contender for high dining in the city. Mixed reviews on the food quality, with some finding it average or disappointing, while others enjoyed the dishes. The service received mixed opinions, ranging from terrible during lunch hours to prompt and great for others. Overall, some patrons had good experiences and enjoyed the delicious, freshly made food, while others felt it didn't live up to the level of being one of the best restaurants in Edmonton.
So Cafe Select sold and Select came to be a year and a half ago. My husband and I booked our date night out not knowing it had changed. When we got there it became very apparent very quickly it was not the same place. The menu was a mix of East Indian and North American. We decided to have East Indian being it was more predominate on the menu. The food was good as was the service. However the ambience was less than desirable for our date night out. Techno dance music was their choice in music. They had a disconnect in their style, with the tables, chairs and the same carpet Cafe Select had and the casual atmosphere. I think if they would have started out with their own liok it may have been different. Given the number of really good authentic East Indian restaraunts in the city I think I will go elsewhere next time.
My wife and I enjoyed a great dinner at Select in Edmonton. I was able easily book a table using a booking app. The location is a little off the main path, but worth the walk. We enjoyed a selection of food which included French Onion soup, appetizers, steak with vegetables. We did elect to attend for a late supper, and found the atmosphere to be relaxed and not rushed. My only constructive feedback would be that the wine selection was somewhat limited and what selections were available were priced in the higher spectrum. Overall, great place to enjoy.
Food was excellent! I had the butter chicken with coconut naan and was very satisfied with my meal. The butter chicken sauce just tasted perfect, it's the kind of sauce where you have multiple flavors going on without having too much, too little, and being perfectly balanced. However, I feel the portion sizes were a bit small given what I paid, and the meal took about an hour to come out (not including our appetizer.) For that, I unfortunately have to dock a star, but don't let it deter you: the food was fantastic and I'll definitely be back for more.
Overall, it was a good experience and we will definitely go back. The waiter was gracious and helpful but he was the only one working and sometimes it was hard to get his attention. However, we had time, so it wasn't a big problem.
The meal wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t anything special. Overall, it was “meh”. Our server was very nice, but he was the only guy working in the restaurant’s front section, and we were the only table of customers. They advertise their cuisine as “international”, but make no mistake ... they are an Indian restaurant, and they clearly only want to serve you Indian food. For the very few “Western” dishes they serve, they were out of nearly EVERYTHING on the non-Indian menu, including the desserts. It was comical ... I went down the line from soups to lamb, and they were all unavailable. The server valiantly tried to get me to switch my order to something on the Indian side of the menu, which I reluctantly did. I am not expert in Indian cuisine, but I am rather fond of tandoori dishes (they purported to have two available). Sadly, the tandoori chicken was uninspired and “okay” at best. My companion, who grew up in India and knows her Indian foods, had the same verdict on her chicken biriani ... meh. Not terrible, but certainly not anything worth writing home about. Their soup of the day was a tomato soup, and it was outstanding. We had to order it because the original starters we ordered were .... unavailable. However, I can’t give you any assessment of their desserts, because the ones we ordered were, once again ... unavailable. We decided to skip desserts instead. All in all, lovely ambience, the staff are nice, but it just misses the mark as a serious contender for high dining in Edmonton.
