Reviews summary
At 17, diners encounter an intimate atmosphere complemented by a focused menu and attentive service. Most reviews highlight the exceptional quality of dishes like duck and the delightful chocolate orange cheesecake. Guests appreciate the friendly staff, who often go above and beyond even with a minimal team. However, some experiences reveal inconsistencies, particularly regarding the quality of ingredients and menu flexibility, leading to disappointment with specific dishes. Though praised for its ambiance and service, the restaurant's execution can falter, creating a dining experience that oscillates between delightful and underwhelming. Overall, it remains a worthwhile visit for many.

We had a lovely evening at the restaurant. We felt welcomed and enjoyed our meal. Despite having only one chef and one staff member, they both worked hard to ensure everything ran smoothly. I'm not sure how they would have managed if there were more customers, but they did a great job. View all feedback.
What JoshuaJ dislikes about 17:
I have visited the restaurant several times and have largely had a pleasant experience. However, I was a bit disappointed with the graduation menu. For example, we had a young child so we asked for plain pasta but they couldn’t do that because everything was pre-made, (which wasn’t a good sign). I think they could have just made some plain pasta given the price of the menu, so I was disappointed about this. I was als... View all feedback.

Book this small, but very courteous restaurant for the first time surprise for my parents 50th high season day. had a lot of research to find the perfect restaurant as they are extremely picky when it comes to having very different tastes, but always expects a high quality and service, but like a warm and friendly atmosphere. I could not have chosen a better restaurant! I can not rate this restaurant or team behind it high enough! from the first question, until booking then on the fantastic recipe, service and amazing eating in the night itself, I even got a nice follow-up email to check that we enjoyed our meal! at the point! 1. the food was delicious and beautifully presented. we were a party of 16 years of young children (7
We went to this restaurant last night and found it to be superb in every way. Excellent food, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff and tasteful surroundings. Will definitely be back. A special thank you to the waitresses who noticed that I was wearing a '40 ' badge and came out singing 'happy birthday ' with candles on my sticky toffee pudding. A nice touch which makes an evening out that little bit more special.
Fabulous little find...We will be back. Staff lovely and the food is amazing...

This quaint restaurant offers delicious food and welcoming service. The portion sizes are generous.
The food was very good but two problems occurred. Even though the room was practically empty except for our party-they ignored the request to let us sit together. Also at the end of the meal we were told that they did not have coffee or brandy.
We had a fantastic meal with wonderful and friendly service. We will definitely be returning in the future.

1st time here and can't recommend it enough. The food is superb, the duck is amazing and the chocolate orange cheesecake is so so nice. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
Delightful, cosy restaurant with small but perfectly formed menu. The service is as good as it gets and the standard of food is absolutely excellent. Prices very reasonable for such nice food with mains from £18. Bit of a 50s James Dean rock’n roll theme throughout which is subtle but adds atmosphere. Comfy seats and nice decor throughout. No car park obviously it’s in centre of Durham. Well kept WC facilities. You can’t add tip to card payments so be sure to bring some cash as you’ll definitely want to leave a tip!

Disappointing. The menu and the ethos of 17 is great, but they don’t deliver. The waitress had no idea of the main components of the dishes, and just poured the wine for all without giving a taster and asking if it was OK. Much of the ingredients were not fresh and presentation was non existent (each plate came with a sprig of water cress). A pity, because if they trained their staff and the chef put some effort in, it would be good. For the money charged, go to Course and really get your money’s worth and a really good dinner.
