Service can be hit or miss, with buffet-style dining on weekends sometimes falling short. The decor is elegant, but the downstairs dining room lacks the cozy atmosphere of the upstairs area. The food receives mixed reviews, with some dishes like the shrimp and grits and creme brûlée impressing, while others fall flat. Despite high prices and occasional service issues, the restaurant is a convenient option for pre-game dining at Duke University.
Dined there on a Saturday evening prior to attending the Duke home basketball game they serve a buffet which helps accommodate the crowd. Would say the service getting a drink could be a lot better. Would be nice to have an a la carte option in place of the buffet walking around collecting food really is not a three or four star experience. The food served was delicious but again, it's hard to recommend a very tasty cubano sandwich or corn chips, salsa and guacamole as being stars. The desserts were very good and would have been excellent if a wait staffer had simple put a couple of each on a plate and brought them to the table. Think of it as a very high end college cafeteria. Beautifully furnished with elegant detail, it has a lovely view out to the patio and woods. Went back after the game and had a cocktail from the main bar excellent gingered pear martini
Hotel was slammed due to duke basketball game. Took minutes to get a glass of wine. Had to get up and find the wait person twice. Server advised against ordering from menu. Appreciated his candor, but had hoped for something better than the buffet. Very odd staffing: lots of managers moving about but short on wait staff. So disappointing. Very cool hotel. Weak on service
When I checked out this restaurant through your site, it showed a menu from what you could order, however, when we arrived it was cafeteria style, which is not what we wanted. The cost for the limited variety of food available was per person. The price was way too high even for an upscale cafeteria. I would like to compliment the wait staff, because they were excellent. But I felt like we’ve been bamboozled, because I wanted a nice place where we could sit down and order off a menu that I had viewed and knew my family would enjoy even though the price was on the higher side but still affordable. However it was Christmas day, so we didn’t have any other choice but to stay there. Our little lunch cost for three people. That’s ridiculous especially when we had to serve ourselves and there wasn’t a wide variety of food from which to choose
Reservation was for on a Saturday to allow time before a football game on campus. We were greeted upon entry of hotel and led downstairs to the Marketplace. There we were told normal menu not available until but offered to seat us upstairs in lobby bar restaurant area for full menu. That was fine with us and service was good, food was very good. Convenient place to eat park before athletic events at Duke
The shrimp and grits were amazing! As well as the Crab Bisque. We finished off with the creme brûlée. The service was wonderful we loved our server who was very helpful and friendly. It is a nice relaxing atmosphere and you can sit in the lounge area by the fire and have the complete menu
