We really enjoyed this place, which had the character we were looking for close to Dunedin. We appreciated the restaurant's secluded atmosphere and found the dinner menu to be limited yet well-curated. The reception and service were excellent. We chose a New Zealand Chardonnay and can highly recommend the seafood chowder and lamb shank. We almost consider 1908 Cafe to be a hidden gem.

In my opinion, it's more of a charming restaurant with a cozy, old-world atmosphere than a cafe. We found the steak to be a bit tough, and the flavors were unbalanced; the tomato base it was served on overpowered the dish. Additionally, the meal lacked any crispy texture, and we were surprised to learn that vegetables were an extra cost. Overall, while I would consider returning to this restaurant because of the beautiful setting, I would definitely avoid ordering the steak again.
