Tropical Delight - Dover
Tropical Delight
Description
Tropical Delight serves hearty Caribbean fare with a homey, family-style welcome — rice and peas, curry chicken, jerk items and oxtails often draw praise, and portions are generous with made-to-order meals worth calling ahead for. Service is warm and staff will remedy mistakes, making it popular for takeout and comfort-food cravings. However, quality is inconsistent: some guests report bland or dry jerk, fatty or rubbery oxtails, odd-smelling rice and even a pest sighting, signaling cleanliness and sourcing issues that need attention.

I recommend trying the traditional food options at this restaurant. My first visit was decent. I had a quick meal of two spicy beef patties and an order of fried wings. The service was good, and I suggest calling in your order ahead of time. The wings were nothing special, but the beef patties were really tasty, although the edges were a bit hard. I'm looking forward to coming back and hoping to give this restaurant a five-star review next time. I can’t wait to try the oxtail!
I had an incredible dining experience! The curry chicken served with rice and peas was absolutely delicious, and the fresh collard greens (sans pork) were a delightful complement. I also ordered some cornbread as an additional side. I left the restaurant feeling completely satisfied and even took home leftovers, which I enjoyed for breakfast this morning before heading to work. The staff treated me like family, which really enhanced the overall experience.
Everything was outstanding, perfectly seasoned, and served in generous portions.
I've received mixed reviews about this restaurant from friends and family, so I decided to give it a try myself. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the food. I sampled several dishes, but my worst experience was with the jerk chicken. It lacked seasoning and was dry; it seemed more baked than grilled, which is not what I typically expect. To add to the disappointment, the rice had a peculiar smell, almost as if it was going bad, and the cabbage was flavorless. After that experience, I think I’ll stick to getting Jamaican food from the Caribbean restaurant in town.
If I could rate this restaurant with negative stars, I definitely would. Instead of being flavorful, the food was bland, and the oxtails were mostly just fat—seriously, what a disappointment. I paid $20.99 for a dish that was nearly inedible. To top it off, as I was leaving, I spotted a cockroach. It's clear this place needs serious help in the kitchen and should seriously consider sourcing better quality ingredients.
