In my first meal at Star Kitchen, I was pleased to discover a menu full of many great choices and old favorites. The food was very good and so was the service on a busy Saturday night. I had planned on being a regular. However, I later found my bank account was charged a 26% tip, when I had left an 18% tip. I disputed the charge I did not sign for through my bank, and the bank – not the restaurant – refunded me the unauthorized tip. There was also a security issue: The restaurant allowed a man to distribute marketing flyers at its front door, and when I refused a flyer on the way into the restaurant, the man blocked me from getting to my car on the way out. He stood in front of my car door. I had to tell him several times to leave me alone to be able to drive away. This made me uncomfortable and was an unpleasant way to end my meal. I alerted the restaurant, but don’t know whether any action was taken to prevent this from happening to other customers.
If you are looking for a nice place to eat dim sum with your family and you are not Asian or friend of the owner, DON’T COME TO THIS PLACE, THEY ABUSE YOU BECAUSE THERE ARE NOT THAT MANY DIM SUM RESTAURANTS IN DENVER. They give you a number, and my wife and I saw that one after another Asian families came, talk to the staff, and get a spot faster than any other people waiting. At one point all people waiting were non Asian. We talked to the girl assigning seating and also the manager, and both impolitely disregard us, just saying “no, number”. Unfortunately there is not that many Dim Sum restaurants in Denver so it is either ignore the abuse, go to another restaurant, come very early or find yourself some Asian friends. The food is good, if you come on Saturday or Sunday around 9-10am. After that it is hell. Be the way, we both love Asian people and Asian cousine, actually we have Asian family members, but we never saw this level of discrimination as we saw in this restaurant (although we saw a little in Boston). I think the second best is Empress Seafood Restaurant in Alameda and Federal. It is not the best quality, but the service is a lot better.
Great little gem in Denver considering the demographics and its location in a midwest city. Has great staff and owner that are actually from Canton. Food is decent for its geographical location. Service is excellent- Cantonese style (friendly, prompt, and on the ball). Awesome evolving Chinese menu and you can order Chinese style. Their cooks are great because you can verbally ask for something and they will do it properly. If they can’t, they will let you know instead of making a crappy version of it. Great selection of live seafood- lobsters, crabs, prawns, and different classes of grouper. Cooked properly. Yum Chai (Dim Sum) is better than most in Denver but every dim sum place here has some dishes that are better than others. The place is busy so you don’t see a lot of the normal size carts. But this place has authentic hard to find dishes that are Vietnamese-Chinese place just have never heard of. The best thing about his place is they do not even bother with mid western American tastes (lack of tastes). Does not over salt or MSG their food to satisfy their cravings for high blood pressure strokes. Go there in big groups for dim sum or you will be on a 45 minute wait list on weekends. Definitely, cater to Chinese people but you are starting to see huge diverse groups.
Star kitchen offers the best dim sum experience in the Denver area! My partner is Chinese and we have had dim sum all over the country in every Chinatown in every major city and this one is reliably good. It’s always crazy busy on weekends and holidays so plan accordingly but their online check-in system to get on the waiting list makes it, an easy experience. I even showed up 15 or 20 minutes after my number had been called and they got me right into a table. The food was fresh and hot. We ordered the beef chow fun off the menu and also had siu mi, beef meatballs, and the chive balls, all of which were excellent. Highly recommended. Maybe shoot for later lunch say after one to avoid the log jam that happens before they open in the morning.
