Went for a brunch with a couple friends, because this place was one of the few open early. The menu isn't too diverse, but we were glad to find some very authentic Chinese style breakfast options like savory rice roll! The beef brisket noodles were alsovery tasty. Don't know why the A/C was turned way up in the winter. View all feedback.
What Xin Miao Lin doesn't like about Shanghai No.1 Shàng Hǎi Yī Hào:
The food at this restaurant is quite good and seems to be fairly authentic compared to other places in Shanghai. We ordered a dozen dishes, and they were all enjoyable. The prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get. However, dining here is a terrible experience due to the lack of air conditioning. I honestly can't understand why they don't turn it on. I was sweating profusely while eating and couldn't wait... View all feedback.
The braised pork is extremely dry and tough to chew. It has a greasy flavor, even worse than my own unsuccessful attempt at making this dish.
The braised pork belly and quail eggs were excellent.
I visited on a Sunday around 4:30 PM and found the restaurant to be quite empty. Every dish we ordered was excellent. There was one dish that took quite a while to arrive, coming out after we had finished everything else. The waitress explained that the person preparing it had arrived late and made it from scratch. You could really taste the freshness—it was delicious! Even though we were all done eating, we couldn't resist finishing that last dish because it was so good.
The fried dough stick arrived alongside the soy milk and remained crispy on the outside while being soft on the inside, even after a 14-mile delivery. The veggie rice was perfectly seasoned and not too oily at all.
Authentic Shanghai cuisine! I truly enjoyed several of the dishes. We visited for Saturday lunch around noon and opted to sit outdoors. The service was a bit slow due to a staff shortage, but that was understandable since there were only two servers handling the busy lunch hour. I particularly liked the Shanghai mushroom combo, savory soy milk, egg yolk tofu, and the herb salad with tofu skin.
