When you enter, you expect a warm greeting, but that’s missing here. It’s often difficult to get the staff’s attention as they seem more interested in chatting with family or friends. No one wants to wait around until their conversations end. On one occasion, my order was wrong because the server was distracted by her personal chat. While the coffee itself is good, the poor service makes it hard to recommend. In a downtown area with many great coffee options, people will choose places where they feel truly valued. D... read more I visited Berraco Coffee for the first time on April 30th, the day after they opened. The place was packed, with a long line outside and no available parking. Despite the crowd, they were fully staffed—two baristas focused on pour-overs and a few others handling the register. Their specialty is Colombian coffee. One barista, who called himself Bogota, mentioned that their coffee is imported pre-roasted, meaning it could be up to two weeks old by the time it's served. They offered several brewing methods like siphon, Kyoto-style iced coffee, and Chemex. I wanted the siphon but it wasn’t available, so I went with the Chemex. The Bourbon roast had a nice flavor, somewhat reminiscent of Modern Times’ barrel-aged roasts. They also provided chocolate-covered espresso beans as a pairing, which was a nice touch. A few months later, after a couple more visits, I decided to hold a weekly work meeting there. I saw Bogota one more time about a week after opening, but never again. On that morning, the cafe was nearly empty, with just one person at the register. I ordered a pour-over and a couple of empanadas. The girl working the register also made my pour-over, which arrived just as my coworker showed up after a 20-minute wait. It then took another 20 minutes for him to get his pour-over. Throughout, loud music blared from a speaker placed on the floor near the Stevens Creek entrance. I felt sorry for the girl, clearly overwhelmed trying to handle the duties of two or three people. The place is definitely understaffed. After that experience, we moved our weekly meetings elsewhere. Berraco has a lot of great ideas, but not enough staff to successfully execute or develop them further.
