We came here after arriving late at the hotel Plaza Revolucion across the road and were looking for a quick late night dinner. The waiter was very helpful and attentive. We had three tacos each, some tortillas as a starter and a bottle of red wine. The total bill came to $348 MXN. Very affordable! Food tasted great and we had a lovely time. Try the bisteca tacos with cheese - amazing!
This place was across the street from where we were staying, Hotel Plaza Revolution (read review) and one night after we had been dropped off by our tour guide Jorge Mendoza (read review in Mexico City forum) we decided we would like something light before we turned in for the night and didn't want to walk far. We had seen this place across the street but it never seemed like anyone was ever in there so tonight we decided to walk across and explore. We were promptly seated and given the wonderful chips and sauces we were now becoming accustomed to, but these were better, they had an extra spice sprinkled on them ( I think it was Tajin). We didn’t want anything heavy so we ordered the Jugo de Carne (it's a soup of meat juice) sounded weird but OMG....it comes with -on the side, onion, cilantro and lime. WOW, it was SO good and hit the spot perfectly. We absolutely loved it and decided we would come back for a proper dinner. We did come back and this time Mom had the Rib Eye (188 pesos about $10 USD) with a Tecate beer (29 pesos about $1.50 USD and I had the Top Sirloin (119 pesos about $6 USD)) and a glass of house wine (40 pesos about $2 USD) The house red wine, from Spain was “Don Simon” really nice and the beer was served cold in a frozen mug, excellent…..the steaks were very tasty and served with French fries. We had been greeted and seated quickly again and the service was hospitable, the server, an older man, doesn’t really speak much but always has a nice smile and is very welcoming. We were then greeted by the owner, Ricardo Cornejo who came over to make sure we were enjoying our meal; he asked if we would be interested in trying some different Tequila’s and Mezcal’s and brought over an assortment. I enjoyed them all but fell in love with the El Mayor Dormo Mezcal, Lima flavor and we began to discuss. He was so engaging and wonderful that we had decided this was our new evening place plus I definitely wanted more of the Mezcal. We didn’t leave without trying some dessert, we ordered a wonderful warmed brownie and fig ice cream (30 pesos about $1.60 USD) The meal including all the Tequila, beer, wine and Mezcal came to 562 pesos about $30 USD. We went back three more times, once for breakfast (unbelievably delicious and again inexpensive) and again for another late night snack of Jugo de Carne….Note: They had closed but when they saw us, the waiter let us in and said “no problema” and got us our Jugo de Carne and my El Mayor Dormo with a welcoming smile and never rushed us. Ricardo Cornejo was there again, and again, super attentive and I did ask where I could purchase the Mezcal. He said it was hard to find but he would see what he could do. He wasn't able to find a bottle but he emailed me an apology for not being able to get me a bottle before we left. Great customer service, this is what makes loyal customers, just the simplest gesture of appreciation and genuine kindness. I do have to add that we did go back for our last dinner there and this time I had the Octopus, I always order the Calamari wherever in the world I am and decided I would be adventurous and try the Octopus, it was a bit too chewy for me, they took it back and cooked it a little longer and it just made it even harder to chew so it went back (I wasn’t charged for it) I had never had it before so I can't compare. The service was always pleasant, the food was always wonderful (except for the Octopus) and the price always affordable. I’m sorry we didn’t discover the wonderful breakfast before- hand as we were walking a couple of blocks each morning to eat at a more expensive and compared to Carambuco just an “a-ok” breakfast. Don't hesitate to wander in, you may get a lesson or two in Tequila’s and Mezcal….but you will definitely get some good traditional food and great service, I will be back to Carambuco next time I’m in Mexico City...most defiantly!
