There are plenty of friendly places in Crete where you can spend the evening chatting with the owner, watching people pass by on the street. This restaurant is a must-visit taverna. The owner is very friendly, speaks multiple languages, and is happy to cater to vegans. We started with stuffed grape leaves and had two delicious and sizable vegan main dishes. The menu is extensive, offering both baked and fried options. If I were to stay in Rethymno longer, I would definitely revisit this place. The food was even tastier than at the only fully vegan restaurant in town.
My family and I visited this restaurant during our holiday and loved it so much that we went back again! It is definitely one of the top restaurants for vegans in the area. The staff was knowledgeable about vegan options and confirmed that the giant white beans were vegan, and they were delicious! At the end of our meal, they brought out complimentary desserts for everyone, though they weren't vegan. When the staff realized this, they offered me a choice of a fruit salad or dairy-free strawberry ice cream instead. There were plenty of other vegan options on the menu as well. I highly recommend this restaurant!
In the tourist areas along the coast from Rethymnon, this taverna stood out because of its variety of vegetarian dishes. Most places are heavy on the meat and fish, although there are usually one or two naturally vegetarian dishes (often a Greek salad and perhaps something like zucchini balls), but this place had a whole vegetarian section in its menu. The food was good and not too expensive. If you're staying in this area Kellari is a better bet than most of the others along the main road we walked up and down quite a way from our hotel in both directions checking out lots of different menus and this one was the winner for variety.
The extremely friendly host graciously offered us a more romantic table complete with an electric candle. The menu included separate sections for both vegetarian and vegan options. I decided to try the vegetarian plate, which featured a mix of various dishes that were each delicious enough to be a standalone dinner. I will definitely be returning to this restaurant.
