Having not visited Lyon before I really wanted to try one their many famous Bouchon’s and try traditional Lyonnaise cuisine. We went to Notre Maison in the heart of the Old Quarter situated in the beautiful cobbled streets a stones throw from Place du Change. I was not disappointed. The restaurant was full of rustic charm. Photographs covered the yellow walls, saucepans strung from the wooden beams. The red tables finished off the rustic decor and charm. Our waiter (Stephane) realised quickly we weren’t French and explain in perfect English that the menu was made up of hearty, dishes and if you are looking for lots of green vegetables and salads this was not the place to eat. He also mentioned to we better have empty stomachs. The menu pays homage to different pork dishes, hearty, slow cooked, and filling. We started with Rosette de Lyon (a plate of saucisson) and Gateau de foie Volaille (Chicken liver cake a chicken liver mousse like pâté covered in a rich tomato sauce). It was really unique and absolutely delicious. The sauce was mopped up with the warm crusty freshly made baguette. There were 5 mains only on the menu which is always a good indication that chef knows what they are doing with each dish. We decided to try Rouleau de Cochon (a large piece of pork, slow cooked in red wine with potatoes and carrot). The pork was so melt in the mouth tender and the rich wine sauce complimented it perfectly balancing the fat on the meat. Sabodet aux Lentilles (A sausage cooked for 5 hours in red wine and Lentils). Big chunks of sausage in Rich, hearty, rustic lentils/ sauce. Delicious. Boudin Noir a la crème (Black pudding sausage with crushed potatoes). The black pudding sausage was perfectly seasoned and again melt in the mouth The dishes were absolutely lovely but filling. Although we were quite full we had to try the deserts. We went for house speciality “Tarte Praline” with a healthy dollop of crème fraiche. Again delicious and definitely worth trying. I highly recommend visiting Notre Maison. The atmosphere/ ambience was great. The service was excellent and most importantly the food was delicious. Definitely go if you like pork, stews, slow cooked hearty traditional food and definitely go on an empty stomach. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: €30–40 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
This place was a jewel that we found in the old city of Lyon for dinner one night, but we found out you need to make a reservation. Good that we found this in the first night and made reservations for the last night we were there. The food is amazing and people are really real, and not to mention there is a living cat, very nice and friendly! Your best bet is to share a Prix festival menu as you get enough food for 2 or if in a group you can choose another Prix festival option and do family style. This is not a place for vegetarians or for anyone who has no adventurous palette. People here are really great and they even gave us an aperitif (Rhum) at the end of the night.
Here you will find rich, buttery and house style lyonnais food. You actually give you a huge block of butter with your bread, so you begin to dig. The trip was well cooked and very tasty, and a bit brownish. It was surprisingly lighter than the other places I tried. My husband has the Lyonnaisworst and lentil stew. It was so rich and hearty that he barely ate half. To dessert they bring you a huge crock of fresh cream. Give it to what you want.
