Huffkins - Cotswold
Huffkins
Description
Huffkins, a storied tea room and bakery, seems to be struggling with recent service and quality issues that mar the otherwise charming experience it offers. Guests have reported unwelcoming greetings, unappetizing food items with processed tastes, and a noticeable lack of attention from staff. While some praised the limited but well-labeled vegan options and exceptional service from certain staff members, others lamented cold meals and insufficient portions. Despite its beautiful setting and some standout offerings, such as gluten-free afternoon tea, many patrons feel Huffkins must innovate and improve its food and service standards to reclaim its former glory.

There weren't many vegan options available, but when we inquired, the staff were able to explain what could be made vegan. The vegan menu included a salad, a sausage bap, scones, avocado on toast, and jacket potato with beans. They also offered oat milk and coconut milk. It was a pleasant surprise to find vegan scones on the menu, as they can be hard to come by. Although they didn't have any vegan cream, they did have vegan margarine and jam. I tried the sausage bap which, like others have mentioned, was made with old-school vegetable sausages - not what I was expecting, but tasty with ketchup. The scone was also delicious. Our waitress was incredibly kind, finding us a table even during a busy time and referring to us as 'my lovely ladies,' which was endearing. The staff who processed our payment were also friendly, and even found it amusing when my friend and I playfully argued over who should pick up the tab.
The greeting we received was unwelcoming and uninviting. While the building itself was impressive, the restaurant's interior appeared cheap and unsanitary. The food seemed processed and lacked the homemade touch we were expecting. Our hot chocolates were disappointing and lacking in chocolate flavor. Additionally, they had run out of marshmallows. It was apparent that these items were not freshly made, but rather produced in a factory. Everything appeared unappealing, packaged in plastic bags and sealed in an industrial manner. Overall, the experience was unpleasant.
Plant based huffkin is not vegan so instead old school sweetcorn and pea veggie sausages are served in very dry brown bread.
Nice little tea room but service wasn't very good, forgot one of the orders, one had egg overcooked another under cooked.
We booked afternoon tea for 8 at the Stow cafe as part of a hen weekend. It was very busy and the lady greeting us was visibly stressed and quite short with customers who were getting confused about whether or not to seat themselves, as it was taking such a long time for them to be greeted. It wasn’t very welcoming. The afternoon tea itself was really nice and good value. A couple of our party asked for modifications and they were all sorted with ease. Our server was also very friendly which was nice. Unfortunately it went downhill a bit again when we waited 25 minutes for the bill and to pay… I got the impression that the cafe has become far too big, staff clearly couldn’t keep up with the demand and it made the experience not as nice as it could have been. I think if they took less customers it would be far more special.
