The Catherine Wheel - Cotswold
The Catherine Wheel
Description
Nestled in the charming village of Bibury, The Catherine Wheel offers the quintessential English pub experience; however, recent visits reveal a mix of highs and lows. Diners have praised the friendly and efficient service, particularly during busy Sunday roasts, which have garnered rave reviews for their generous portions and delightful flavors. Yet, disappointments linger, with reports of inconsistent food quality, stale bread, and inattentive service. While the atmosphere is inviting, some patrons felt overlooked and underwhelmed by their meals. For those exploring scenic Bibury, The Catherine Wheel remains a charming option, albeit with room for improvement.

So sadly disappointed on the food at this establishment. Started with burnt garlic bread. We sent back all of the mains the liver and onions were so tough you couldn't cut it. It was so over cooked. It was to be accompanied by braised cabbage but was not sent out with food. We had to ask for it. The fish and chips were burnt on the outside and undercooked on the inside. My plate had maybe 10 chips where as my partners was loaded with them. There certainly was no love showed to the food. We are not tourists we are people who have lived in the area for the past 50 plus years. The reason I am even giving it a 1 star is because the young man who served us was personable and polite. Otherwise wise I would give zero stars. I felt sorry to the floor staff that were clearly left on their own with a full house. I think we seen two and that was it. .
Popped in for a couple of drinks whilst on a long walk, and thought it was great. Really good array of drinks and whilst we didn't eat there the food looked superb, especially the pies! Somewhere we have ear marked to return to and see if it tastes as good as it looks!
Today, our group of four adults and two children arrived at the pub around 1:30 pm, but we were asked to return after 2:30 pm due to crowding. With few alternatives nearby and the children growing visibly hungry, we decided to wait, hopeful a table would open. While waiting, we noticed several tables inside were unoccupied, and there were no guests seated outdoors. Also we noticed several other customers who arrived after us being promptly seated. When we politely approached the staff again, even offering to sit outdoors if it would help, they simply told us to go and come back, instead of offering us seats and letting us know the service might be slower. At that moment, it was hard not to feel as though we were being treated differently. Watching others consistently prioritized and seated none of whom shared our ethnicity left us with a heavy, unmistakable feeling of exclusion. Though we’re reluctant to make assumptions, the experience felt like a clear instance of racial bias. Our willingness to be flexible went unacknowledged, leaving us disheartened and disappointed by the pub’s treatment.
Four of us ate here on a Saturday evening. Whilst the food is a little pricey, it is what is to be expected for the area. Staff were friendly but maybe a little over-efficient as we felt slightly rushed. Our starters were good, and three out of the four mains were also good. Unfortunately I opted for the fish and chips, which was pretty awful unfortunately. The batter was extremely undercooked, being a pale beige colour rather than golden brown, it was rubbery and tasted of raw flour. In hindsight I should have sent it straight back, but I don’t generally like to make a fuss. The fish inside was cooked but tasteless (hake I suspect) so I left most of the meal. I did raise the issue and suggested a discount on the bill (paying £10 instead of £17.50 for the dish). The manager agreed and apologised so I have no complaints about the service, though I would have liked them to be more proactive about handling complaints.
This place was one of the best restaurants I have been to in the UK, and I have been to quite a few in different cities. The trout was so perfect, every table had ordered at least one. The steak was so fresh, and I recommend the tartar sauce! The fish is a MUST. Now to the dessert, it's a wate if you go there and don't try the dark chocolate pot!
