Reviews praise Freemasons’ friendly service, breakfasts and wine list but note occasional inconsistencies: some dishes arrive warm and background music is sometimes remarked upon.

We had a really heartwarming experience today finding this place on a whim. The staff were so kind and welcoming, the atmosphere was cosy and don't get me started on the food. Or do it was excellent. Each bite was an unforgettable experience, each dish crafted to beautifully... the menu had unique items I haven't seen anywhere else and it was a great opportunity to try new flavours, absolutely none of them disappointed. The decor was super homey yet refined, the upstairs was especially beautiful, like a museum. This is the type of place you come to celebrate something special and I cannot wait for another special opportunity to present itself. Thank you for having us!

We wanted to try the Freemasons following it’s #3 ranking on the Estrella Damm best gastropubs list. We were not disappointed at all. While the accommodation doesn’t look much from the outside, the room that we had (Mr Fox) was beautifully appointed. The main part of the bedroom contained a really large (and very comfortable) bed and a hidden bathroom/ shower room, and upstairs on the mezzanine floor, a beautiful roll top bath. The restaurant was magnificent. We were initially met (and shown to our room), by Jackson. A fine young man, who will go far in the world. The staff in the restaurant were magnificent Bobbie, the bartender, was a fount of local knowledge and recommendations for places to visit and Andrew, the maitre’D was delightful. Part raconteur, comedian and sommelier, he helped make the evening a real joy. The food was the star of the show. Beautifully presented and extremely tasty, the pub’s stellar ranking was definitely deserved. We would have no hesitation in recommending this place to friends and would love to stay again if we found ourselves in the area.

We had boxing day lunch here for 6 adults and 2 children. We preordered. On arrival, then gentleman that greeted us was lovely and attentive to the children. The lady behind the bar the same. The place is stunning and just my vibe, the ‘room’ we were in was perfect for our family get together also. The down side was the rest of the service. We weren’t checked on much, so ordering drinks was difficult and we ended up going down to the bar ourselves. The food service was incredibly slow. 2 and a half hours after arriving and having 2 courses, we had to chase our desserts.

Outstanding food, impeccable service. Great for couples with dogs and could cater for allergies (Coeliac).

A couple of years since we've stayed here and the first visit since the change of chef. A few little niggles with the room that need attention. TV not working despite querying this with the staff and a slow flow with the shower. The main change though was with regards to the food. It was really nice but not comparable to the previous dining experiences we have had at The Freemasons which were amazing!! If anyone has ever experienced a breakfast here you will know what I mean when I say it is simply the best you will ever get that too has changed under the new chef!! The breakfast was actually disappointing:

More information

Though guests rave about the breakfasts and the tasting menu, several reviewers note the kitchen sometimes swaps courses or leans more pub-style on a given night—if you have your heart set on a specific format (multi-course tasting vs. hearty gastropub plates), calling ahead to confirm the evening’s menu can make a big difference.
