We were looking for somewhere to sit outside for lunch on a sunny weekend in May. Van Hage garden centre in Chenies has quite a few outdoor tables as well as plenty of indoor tables. There is plenty of choice and the food is reasonable... View all feedback.
What jkentw doesn't like about Cafe Vh:
Went to the garden centre today and decided visit the cafe again. Was very disappointed. No scones left when they kept the sign out advertising it. Girl playing with her hair over the food behind the counter. Tables dirty and empty while the employees were... View all feedback.
My friend and I were not allowed to be seated where we wished as those tables were for” families “, we were then ushered to a four seater table where we then waited for nearly twenty minutes to order . The quiche was totally inedible and would have been better used as a door stop . When we asked for omelettes we were told they did not make a simple dish like omelettes on a Sunday ?.? The inadequate staff did as best they could but clearly there should have been more on at busy weekends . Having said that, the tables where we were refused to use still lay empty as we left . On leaving we asked Mr Jobsworth on the door for the name of the manager where upon we were told he couldn’t give it to us as it was a “matter of privacy “???? So unfortunately this visit failed to meet our requirements and we will be finding another venue for our lunch
Cafe is currently closed for refurbishment. There is a large notice at the front entrance saying this What it doesn't say is that there are no toilet facilities. This should have been on the notice. For older people,or families with small children this could be a problem.Surely they could have mentioned it? Chenies is not well served with any other facilities. At leasst if it had been on the website, you could plan your visit better. The rest of the centre is a joy as ever, plants, gifts, service, everything is top. Hopefully the new cafe will be as good as it used to be
We went to Cafe VH for tea one Sunday in the summer. There was a long line to be served at the counter. When we got to the front of the queue there was virtually nothing left to eat. Also, the tables are all dirty, piled high with dirty dishes. Very poor.
Lovely cakes no longer served.used to be special now distinctly average..slow service. Used to be a preferred destination for the cake. Sadly no longer.
The café was always a pleasure to visit, and the previous owners clearly understood the café was a pull factor with great value prices so that visitors would then purchase other items in the garden centre. The new owners however are super greedy and have attempted to turn the café into a money-making machine with completely over-the-top prices. The problem there is high prices have to be matched with high-quality food and service. The service is still great, and the team are always friendly and hard-working. But the food quality is average at best, so it just will never work to charge Harrods of Knightsbridge prices for basic cakes, sandwiches, and salads. You only have to look at the other recent Trip Advisor reviews and the picture is pretty clear customers are finding the prices ridiculous. I only hope the new owners quickly realise this isn’t sustainable and at the very least they should be reducing the prices to a more affordable reasonable level and try to keep in mind the Chenies garden centre is a very much-loved leisure destination for the local surrounding community who will happily come in frequently to spend some money but at the same time do not want to feel cheated by the Café.
