What Fernlay doesn't like about Beijing Palace:
The mixed starters were just okay. The rolls were just batter, seaweed over sweet and obviously bought in. Sauces on ribs and chicken both bland yet over sweet at the same time. Crispy duck not crispy, but overall okay not good) but ruined by horrid version of hoisin sauce. Again so sweet. Main courses inedible. The crispy beef was a gelatinous blob of soggy all stuck together in some gooey sauce. The egg fried rice... View all feedback.

I visited the restaurant today and was surprised to see that the owners have transformed it into a coffee shop. The food was decent, with a trendy Anglo-American menu. I must say, the latte I ordered was possibly the smoothest I've ever had.
The Beijing, once known as the best Chinese restaurant in the area, seems to have lost its stellar reputation. With the rise of Thai cuisine in recent years, having a top-notch traditional Chinese eatery is crucial. Unfortunately, it appears that lockdown may have impacted the quality of the food. After ordering takeout from The Beijing multiple times in the past year, we have been consistently disappointed. The dishes are nothing like they used to be, and it is a real shame. We will not be returning.
I had a takeaway today consisting of beef with black bean sauce, prawn Sechuan and rice. The prawns were nice and big and the beef itself was fine but both sauces were virtually devoid of vegetables except for huge amounts of raw (or very nearly) raw onions. There was the tiniest quantity of green pepper and some raw carrots and that was it. No spring onions or anything else remotely interesting or relevant to Chinese food. It was one of the worst Chinese takeaways I've had.
We have been loyal patrons of Beijing Palace for more than two decades and have always been impressed by their exceptional service and high-quality food. We have never been disappointed with our meals and recently have noticed an even further improvement in the already outstanding quality. The staff is always professional and the food has become exceptional. We highly recommend this fantastic restaurant!
