Sun Submarine - Chicago
Sun Submarine
Description
Nestled on North Laramie in Austin, Sun Sub is a late-night comfort-food spot celebrated for a sprawling menu—anchored by the Gym Shoe, Italian beef, gyros and fried dinners—but recent visits reveal troubling inconsistencies. Customers report long waits, incorrect or underfilled orders, greasy or overcooked items and brusque service. Its generous hours and variety still draw crowds, yet quality control and staff attitude issues undermine the neighborhood staple unless improvements are made.

I go here all the time. There prices better the every restaurant in the area. Quick efficient.
My order was completely wrong. When I ordered the lady was quick and hurrying me off the phone. I was charged for what I asked for but got the wrong order. They treated me like I was wrong.
The fries were overcooked, and they didn’t want to give me the fries that were supposed to come with my order because I ordered an extra serving for my son. I ended up waiting an additional 30 minutes for them to cook fries for me, even though I had already been waiting nearly an hour for my food. Keep in mind I called 40 minutes earlier, yet my order still wasn’t ready. It feels like they’re cheating people out of their food and money. Overall, it was a terrible experience with such bad attitudes.
I'm not picky. If the food tastes good, that's all that matters, right? The surroundings isn't necessarily a consideration. I don't have to be dining at the Ritz. Sun Subs isn't the Ritz. Located at 321 North Laramie Avenue in Chicago's not-so-elegant Austin neighborhood, south of Kinzie and Lake, it is a fast-food emporium that delivers all the inexpensive but ever popular comfort or street food that any self-respecting Chicago Cubs fan can imagine, including the Gym Shoe, a Chicago original that was created on the South Side in the 1940s but has been introduced to other city residents in recent years. You haven't heard of the Gym Shoe? It's a mega hoagie roll packed with three types of meat--Greek-American style gyros, roast beef and corned beef--with lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, cheese, onions, sweet peppers, tzatziki and Chicago-style giardiniera. Sun Sub's menu also includes hot dogs, Polish, gyros, Philly cheese steak, burgers, tacos, burritos, Italian beef, Buffalo hot wings, chicken nuggets, cheese fries and several submarine sandwiches, including corned beef, turkey, gyro, ham and turkey, roast beef and the ever loving Gym Shoe. In addition, you can order a dinner, either chicken tenders, jumbo shrimp, perch or catfish. Open from 11 to midnight Monday through Saturday, Sun Sub attracts a late crowd always hungry for a late snack.
