Steak 'n Shake - Chicago

As a former dorm resident, this was one of my favorite spots to visit. The food is delicious and reasonably priced, and the atmosphere is welcoming with great people. Just a heads-up: parking is street parking, and you'll need to pay to park.

I used to love visiting this restaurant before the pandemic. It was always clean, and there was a wide variety of food options. Kids' meals even came with fun hats and coloring pages. I recently returned, excited after not having been there for a year. Living about 30 minutes away, I hoped it would be worth the drive, especially since car rides often make me nauseous. However, I was really taken aback. I’ll admit that the new ordering system was somewhat interesting, but everything else was disappointing. They previously offered chicken tenders and other dishes, but now the menu only features hamburgers, hot dogs, and grilled cheese. When I used the restroom, it was appalling; the toilets looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in months. I didn’t notice how dirty the floors and tables were until after I placed my order. When my food finally arrived, it was mediocre at best. Overall, it felt like a complete waste of time and money. This was the worst dining experience I've ever had.

Although their website states that they are open until 2 a.m., don't waste your time driving there. There's a sign on the window that says "Closed for ???". Hopefully, they'll see this post and update their website to avoid misleading anyone else.

This location may be closed you cannot order online and phone disconnected. This owner also owned re-opened and closed again the frankfort Il location, perhaps the same fate for this university park locale. My experience two years ago awful so I never returned but always empty or closed when I drive past on halsted these days

I highly do NOT RECOMMEND this place. Where do you start the staff is very rude . Customer service sucks food is terrible. I bit into a hard cold chicken tender and cracked my tooth what a day! I called to make them aware the fat old man who couldn’t rarely see tried to argue with me that food was cold and it it was the food they had sitting in that basket I wish I took a picture of they should be ashamed of themselves.I honestly don’t think I want to deal with management if it’s the same Courtney I think it is. Because she has an nasty attitude as well.
