Tucked on a busy intersection, this halal Yemeni/Mediterranean restaurant shines with tender, flavorful lamb kabsa, mandi and generous family platters. Service is often friendly and efficient, and it’s good for takeout and wheelchair access. Expect limited street parking and a $3 per-person gratuity for groups of five-plus. Some dishes can be greasy or under-seasoned, portion sizes and cleanliness vary, and isolated service lapses have been reported, but authentic flavors keep patrons coming back.
PATHETIC EXPERIENCE EVER!!! One of the most pathetic restaurants I?ve ever been to. The staff before was very kind and the food quality and taste was much better. The guy at the reception/register is very unprofessional and even when dealing with customershe is on call really loud and doesn?t pay attention to customers at all. And when asked for a bag and receipt he threw itinstead of handing it to the customer. Also, when we got the food home, there were two small hair in the mandi rice and it wasnot even freshly cooked. Absolutely pathetic experience, wouldn?t recommend this at all!
This review used to be four stars, but I've downgraded it to one. While the food is fantastic, the portion sizes have been significantly reduced. The main reason for my change in rating, however, is the behavior of a staff member. I had a water bottle with me and was told that outside water isn't allowed and that I had to buy water from them. To be honest, I don't mind spending a dollar on water, but you've just lost a customer.
If you're interested in trying something unique, Yemeni cuisine is definitely worth exploring. It offers distinct flavors that set it apart from most other Middle Eastern dishes. Shibam on Elston is the best place in the city for authentic Yemeni food. Their meals are consistently fresh and flavorful, featuring incredibly tender meat. While the dishes can be somewhat greasy—since cooking lamb on the bone tends to yield a good amount of fat—this adds to the overall experience. My favorite dishes include the Lamb Mandi and Aghda lamb. I ordered delivery and took some pictures to give you an idea of what to expect. They serve generous portions of meat, even if the photos don’t fully showcase it!
The family platter meal was generous, serving enough for 3 people. It was delicious and flavorful. I also enjoyed trying the tea and one of the desserts with dates, both were fantastic.
The lamb Khabsa and lamb Mandi were excellent. The restaurant also provided a good starter soup and mixed salad as a courtesy.
