I had an absolutely amazing experience at Schwa! Everything about this restaurant was unforgettable, and even its minimalist decor contributed to its unique charm. View all feedback.
What Nikita Doroff dislikes about Schwa:
Although the food served here doesn't quite reach the high standards of Michelin-rated restaurants, the portion sizes and the number of servings are also on the smaller side. The ambiance is dimly lit, and the decor feels a bit outdated. Furthermore, the table arrangement can feel somewhat cramped. It’s possible that the restaurant's BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) policy helps draw in customers. View all feedback.
Visited Schwa for a special occasion all the way from Hotlanta. Absolutely loved innovative cuisine without pretentiousness from the CDC. His juxtaposition of East meets West ingredients with various cooking techniques truly shines as you taste each dish. Each dish was absolutely delicious, thought provoking and wish I had time to ask ideas behind each and every dish I tasted tonight. Portion was just enough in my opinion, but I did feel like i could have one more bite on every single dish because they were that delicious. Yes, it is a bit noisy and space is limited, but I personally thought it sets Schwa apart from traditional Michellin star recipients because they ARE different. Byob was awesome asI was able to bring my own collection. I 've already recommended Schwa to a colleague of mine visiting Chicago in Sept, and will visit next time I 'm in Chicago. It 's hip, fun, and intimate with pretty much open kitchen . If you want to know what that means, please visit Schwa. You won 't be disappointed.
All in all a very good experience.Top end tasting menu. BYOB. Very intimate. Very GF accommodating.Staff very helpful and gracious.Really enjoyed the food. Novel. The music was toooo loud and we had a hard time hearing each other. But all round an experience.Try it out.
What a fun night! If you’re looking for Michelin quality and innovation without to pretension, this is it. Loved being able to byob from my own collection and doing shots with the kitchen. The food was incredible and inventive. Mind blowing flavor combinations. Took off a star for the amount of food. Was put off that some of the 12 courses were combined. For instance a drink and bite meant to be consumed together counted as two courses and this left me wanting when the final course came. A fantastic experience though.
Every food enthusiast should visit Schwa at least once, as it completely redefines the concept of fine dining the moment you arrive at this highly acclaimed, Michelin-starred establishment. The experience is extraordinary—and sometimes jarring—right from the start. Chef Michael Carlson is akin to the Jean-Michel Basquiat of gourmet cuisine. When you approach the restaurant, it almost appears closed, with no lights visible. You pull open the dark door and enter a small, dimly lit space featuring just seven tables filled with fortunate diners in an intimate room adorned with black walls. You’re met with a loud backdrop of rap music that is anything but subdued. There are no traditional waitstaff; instead, heavily tattooed chefs prepare your meal and personally bring each dish to your table. They present you with daring, creative combinations of unique ingredients, bold flavors, and artistic presentations. Interestingly, there’s no wine list; it’s a BYOB establishment since all the focus at Schwa is on the food, crafted with the utmost care. The talented young chefs serving fantastic course after course represent the promising future of Chicago's culinary scene. Many aspiring chefs kickstart their careers in this innovative environment. You can’t help but smile and shake your head in disbelief—who knew dining could be this enjoyable? It’s an exhilarating blend of raw energy and top-notch culinary ingredients, completely irreverent yet utterly sublime.
I've had Schwa on my must-visit list for some time, and it did not let me down. Each dish was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The restaurant's interior is cozy and intimate, softly lit, with artwork that gives you an underwater vibe. I highly recommend a visit, but be sure to check back often for availability, as reservations tend to fill up quickly!
