Description

Nestled in Chicago, this no-frills, family-run spot serves authentic Filipino comfort food with generous portions and wallet-friendly prices. Standout plates — lechon/lechon kawali, sisig, bistek, adobo and halo-halo — earn frequent praise for homestyle flavor, and catering and takeout are popular. However, consistency varies: some diners report bland pancit, fatty cuts or seasoning issues, plus occasional rude service and unreliable card machines (cash-only at times). For lovers of traditional Filipino dishes seeking hearty, unpretentious fare, it’s a local favorite.

I wanted to rate this restaurant higher, but the service really put me off. The food was quite good, but our initial waitress had a terrible attitude. From the moment we arrived, she seemed annoyed, and this negative vibe continued throughout our meal. At one point, she even expressed her desire to go home to the second waitress who assisted us at the end. Unfortunately, I think we’ll be passing on this place in the future.

Kawayan's Filipino cuisine brings back memories of my trip to the Philippines. I would certainly dine here again.

10-22-2022I hate to give such a negative review for this mom and pop shop, but their shrimp pancit bihon is terrible. So bland. No celery or pea pods as advertised. The shrimp tasted like it was from frozen then boiled. The noodles were so broken up, I had to use a spoon. Absolutely no flavor. I threw it away. I should have known better because I didn 't see anyone carry-out pancit. The whole lechon kawali looked good though. Seemed to be the most popular thing for carry-out. Also there was a sign that said cash only today. But the sign looked old. I 'm assuming it 's cash only everyday.

This classic Filipino eatery offers affordable dishes with generous portions. In the picture, you can see the Liemposilog and Pork Mami. I was hoping for a different kind of Liempo, but the Lechon was excellent. The Garlic Fried Rice was a little on the wet side— not salty, but still flavorful. Normally, this place accepts debit and credit cards, but during my visit, they could only take cash as their machine was out of order.

Been a fun of this restaurant. But something is good and not so good. And still ordering from them.
