Reviews - Hungry Brain
Reviews summary
Hidden in Chicago’s scene, The Hungry Brain is a retro, pseudo-speakeasy club celebrated for intimate jazz and piano nights, rotating local acts, and lively jam sessions. A spacious bar serves craft cocktails from skilled bartenders alongside cheap beer, while a digital jukebox and colorful lights add character. The venue favors quiet, attentive crowds, making it ideal for music lovers, though seating is limited and the food menu and plating could use attention. Frequent themed nights and nearby late‑night snacks make it a must-visit for local-music aficionados.

The atmosphere is fantastic, and the drinks are delicious! Be sure to visit on Tuesdays for an early performance by the master pianist Erwin Helfer, and stay for an incredible jazz jam session with talented musicians. I loved every moment! Plus, there's Stevo's nearby for some late-night snacks to help soak up those drinks. View all feedback.
What Jay Fal dislikes about Hungry Brain:
I attended an event at this restaurant for the first time. Overall, it was a satisfactory experience, but I think they need to put more emphasis on the menu and how the dishes are presented. View all feedback.

Fantastic music, wonderful people, and great prices. This is definitely one of my favorite places in the city!
I attended a jazz show here and had a great time! While the outside of the venue appears to be intriguing, the interior is simply lovely.

Hungry Brain is great for a first date, or a secret rendezvous to hand over a USB stick full of incriminating evidence.Huge recommend! Very clean bathroom!

Yes, Charles Joseph Smith, I agree, reminded me of the velvet lounge, I loved that place. My son use to play there also. Last night was my first trip to The Hungry Brain, but hope to return. I enjoyed the fact that they keep the crowd quiet so we can hear the music. Chicago Edge Ensemble did a great job. You would never have known it was their first live gig together.
In its jazz gigs, the Hungry Brain is almost like a second Velvet Lounge, but it is a lot more to this place then just being a modern jazz venue that pleases me. DIY rock has been embraced there too, and spoken word and comedy acts also had been done too. Fairly dark atmosphere in a style of a pseudo-speakeasy, a digital jukebox with thousands of pop and rock numbers, and colorful Christmas lights to boot. All of this makes me so happy at the Hungry Brain.
