This is a great local dinner spot, a place to unwind and relax with an old vibe and charm. Service and food were very good. Their Cesar salad and their French fries are delicious! I ordered a small Cobb salad and informed them I would arrive in 30 minutes. Upon my arrival I learned my order was never entered into the system. I usually never complain unless it's absolutely necessary, and seeing I have NO lunch at work this was CLEARLY THE PERFECT TIME TO COMPLAIN. THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME HANGRY. Service: 1

Exchequer Restaurant Pub — history, warmth, and great comfort food We stopped by Exchequer Restaurant Pub in downtown Chicago after visiting the Art Institute, looking for a place to warm up, relax, and unwind. What we found was a true Chicago gem with real character and soul. This is not just a bar or restaurant — it’s a piece of history. Al Capone himself used to frequent this place, and you can feel that legacy everywhere. The walls are filled with stylish vintage photos, paintings, and original newspaper clippings from the Prohibition era. At the entrance, you’re even given a small booklet with the history of the pub, which immediately pulls you into the atmosphere of the time — such a thoughtful and unique touch. Special thanks to Niko the Greek, the bartender — incredibly friendly, open, and welcoming. He made us feel like regulars rather than first-time visitors. People like him truly bring a place to life. We ordered the chicken soup and the French onion soup, and they were exactly what we needed after a long museum visit — warm, comforting, flavorful, and satisfying. Perfect food to recharge on a cold day. Exchequer is the kind of place where: • history meets genuine coziness • food is simple but done right • the atmosphere feels authentic, not touristy We will absolutely be back. If you want to experience real Chicago, with its Prohibition-era stories, character, and charm — this place is a must-visit. Price per person: $30–40 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Where should I begin? The cream of chicken soup is absolutely outstanding! Everything we tried was fantastic! The sweet chili wings were my personal favorite—so delicious! The service was excellent too! I will definitely be returning soon!

It's difficult for me to give a low rating, especially regarding service, but this experience warranted it. The food was outstanding, though it took quite a long time to arrive. Our main issue was that our server didn’t check on us even once while we waited over an hour for our meals. Our waters and cocktails remained empty throughout this time. I ordered a salad, which arrived about 30 minutes in, but it came without dressing or silverware. Once we finally received our food, which was truly delicious, it took another 45 minutes for our server to come by. We still had no drink refills during the wait. We had to request the bill and ultimately took it to the bar ourselves to pay, or we would have likely waited another 45 minutes.
