Suburbs Eaterie - Chester
Suburbs Eaterie
Description
Tucked in Hoole, this relaxed restaurant offers a strong wine list, standout oysters, inventive seasonal menus and good vegetarian choices. Service ranges from attentive and knowledgeable to intermittently distracted, with occasional upselling. Desserts and festive dishes win praise, but mains can be uneven—underseasoned or poorly timed—and a Sunday roast was served cold and skimpy. Value and cider variety could improve, and there's no mobile card machine. Still worth a visit for atmosphere, knowledgeable staff and excellent starters, though expect occasional inconsistency.

I really enjoyed the food and drinks and would definitely return. However, there were times when it was a bit hard to get the staff's attention, and occasionally they came across as a bit too eager, pushing drinks and upselling. Additionally, the cider selection was disappointing; the only option was a dry imported cider. Given the variety of excellent ciders available in the UK, like Aspall and various niche microbreweries, it would be great to see some of those offered here.
Absolutely fantastic! The food is outstanding, and the staff are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. The selection of wines is lovely, and there's a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. You can't find anything better in Hoole. I absolutely love it!
The main courses were disappointing; the Thai prawn curry lacked flavor and was quite bland. The flat iron steak wasn't properly seasoned or cooked. On a positive note, the oysters were excellent, although the salsa verde could use some improvement. The atmosphere of the restaurant is pleasant, and the service was satisfactory. However, the bar next door is outstanding.
The atmosphere is very inviting. Even though I'm from an older generation, I still appreciate a place that offers something a bit unique.
I had a very disappointing experience with the Sunday roast today. There was barely any beef—just two small slices of shredded beef for £14.95. The meal was served cold, and even after sending it back, it came back just as cold. Two half-pints of beer set me back £9 as well. I truly recommend saving your money and dining elsewhere. I tried to discuss my concerns with James, the manager, but there was no resolution.
