Great food and wine felt like our waitress Autum was very good , did not have a long wait for anything It was my birthday and we were assigned a table for 4 by the back near the kitchen , I asked if I could please be moved to a booth ..At 73 it was so nice to get that special treatment of kindness to be moved to an ideal spot. Then I got an amazing yummy dessert for free!! Great birthday experience . View all feedback.
What Michael Schuett doesn't like about 39 Rue De Jean:
Overall, good experience. Tried and true restaurant that has withstood the test of time. Multiple seating venues including outside. The menu is very good and offers a wide selection. Our server was very good. Friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The rabbit was so dry that we couldn't finish it. The food could have been served a little warmer but they did have runners and staff bringing food so I don't thin... View all feedback.

Our server was very good. Friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The rabbit was so dry that we couldn't finish it. The food could have been served a little warmer but they did have runners and staff bringing food so I don't think it sat. Overall, classic dishes prepared solidly. My main issue was the hostess. She did not smile nor was she friendly. One might even say she was rude. She barely spoke to us leaving us wondering what was happening. Not a very good first customer contact.
We have never been here before and it was a wonderful experience. I got the halibut, was very good. my husband got the chicken francaise it was fabulous!! Salads were also very good. We will definitely return
39 Rue de Jean is one of our long-time favorites in Charleston. We have been enjoying their rendition of a classic French restaurant since 2013. Over that 10-year span the quality of the food and the experience has never waivered. Consistency is a tough standard for any restaurant and 39 Rue de Jean delivers.
This has become a mediocre restaurant. Flies buzzing around the table, inattentive service, and poorly executed food. 30 years ago this was a shining star on the Charleston food scene. Today it is a has-been. There are countless outstanding restaurants in CHZ these days at the same price point from Sorelle to SNOB, I encourage you to select one of these passionate restaurants.
The food and service were very disappointing. We had been going there for 20 years, but no more! The wait staff is all new and poorly trained or naturally not of a “service mentality”. As the meal began, the waiter spilled an entire glass of water on me and without even apologizing, just said “well I guess dessert is on me” and continued pouring water. No visit from the manager or other apology. Then the food was poor the mussels were very small and tough. The white wine was room temperature and basically we could not leave fast enough. Sorry to see an old standard go. Very disappointed.
