We stopped here for lunch on our way to Mesa Verde, based on a recommendation from the staff at the CHAMA Visitor Center. We were craving burgers and were told this was a great place to get them. The service was friendly, but a bit slow as there seemed to be only one person working as both the cashier and waiter (presumably there was someone else in the kitchen). We decided to visit this restaurant because it was bustling with local patrons during lunchtime. We were pleasantly surprised by the crowded atmosphere, with more cowboy hats than we had seen on our entire trip. The menu cover featured a cowboy theme, and we were intrigued by the promise of a delicious green chile burger. The food was fresh and flavorful, with superb fries and very friendly locals. The food was good, though we had to wait a bit longer than expected. I understand they were busy, and the freshness of the food made it worth the wait. However, I was surprised that they didn't have sopapillas, which is unusual for a New Mexico restaurant serving Mexican cuisine. That was a bit disappointing while we were eating. Overall, it's a decent place to stop when you're in the Chama area.
I hadn't visited JV's in nearly 20 years, so it was a pleasure to return and see the same beautiful, cheerful young women managing the restaurant. The food is just as good as I remembered—my favorite is the beef chalupa, although it's definitely not for the faint of heart. It's spicy!

Not much to look at, but the food is GREAT!
