Subway
Description
The Subway in CHAMA presents a blend of experiences, from commendable cleanliness and friendly staff to disappointing food quality and customer service. While some diners appreciated the fresh taste and pleasant atmosphere, others were frustrated by high prices and a lack of meat in their sandwiches. Reports of rude staff interactions have tarnished its reputation, deterring potential repeat customers. During our road trip, we passed through Chama and decided to stop at Subway. The restaurant was extremely clean and all the food tasted fresh. We were a little unsure about stopping in the town at first, but we were quite hungry and glad we made the decision. The owner maintains a spotless environment and was very friendly. In a small tourist town like this, it seems like this restaurant doesn't bother to make much effort since they don't rely on repeat customers. The establishment appeared rundown and dirty, with doors propped open by chairs and obvious signs of neglect like leaks and holes. The food wasn't much better - while my roast beef footlong meal was covered, the lettuce was brown and many options looked old and unappetizing. Even though I saw the staff add salt and pepper, the sandwich was bland and the bread felt undercooked. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but after only three bites, I wrapped it up and tossed it away. Thankfully, there are better dining options nearby, such as Serious Texas BBQ and the Elkhorn Cafe at Elkhorn Lodge. While choices in Chama may be limited, one place to avoid is Subway.
Subway is an average fast food joint with quick and friendly service. They offer takeout meals for lunch at a price range of $10 to $20 per person. The food quality is rated a 3 out of 5, while the service and atmosphere both score a 5 out of 5.
This could be the first negative review I have ever written. Normally, I only write reviews for exceptional experiences. The owner who made our sandwiches was not only rude, but also aggressive. After struggling to hear our order (my friend has a slight Spanish accent), he even suggested cancelling our order altogether. I have been a resident here my entire life, and I do not anticipate this new management lasting long.
Be cautious of the high prices at this Subway location, as they are comparable to those at airports. We ordered a 6-inch tuna sandwich for $8.99 and a 12-inch veggie sandwich for a surprising $12.99. Unfortunately, the veggies were not fresh, with the iceberg lettuce and cucumbers appearing brown. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.
