Hester's in Roscommon offers a mix of experiences, with some diners enjoying delicious meals and excellent service, while others experienced rude staff and questionable food quality. Despite some negative encounters, the restaurant's family-run charm and traditional Irish hospitality shine through, enticing many to return for another taste of its offerings. With a varied menu and accommodating service for large groups, Hester's aims to please all customers, even if the occasional misstep may occur. Overall, the restaurant leaves a mixed impression, with both highs and lows contributing to its unique character and reputation in the town.
Had a lovely lamb dinner and spuds..they threw out a plate of chips also free keenly priced..warm and cosy would highly recommend this place for a bite to eat
We had such a lovely experience at Hesters – definitely a 5-star visit! The food was absolutely delicious – full of flavour, homemade, and so tasty we were still talking about it afterwards. The staff were so friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Couldn’t fault a thing. We’ll definitely be back again soon!
I went to Golden Eagle for dinner and ordered a beef dish along with other items for my family. When my beef arrived, it had a strong fishy smell and taste, which was very off-putting since I don’t eat fish. The smell alone made me feel sick. I asked the waitress to check it in the kitchen, but she refused, though she said she believed me. I also ordered a jug of water and blackcurrant for everyone, only to later find out it was just tap water. Given that much of Roscommon has issues with water contamination, I avoid drinking tap water. On another visit, we requested BBQ sauce and were given a bottle that was a year past its expiration date. When it was time to pay, the woman clearing my dinner said I had to pay the full amount because the manager was not present. I said I would contact the manager myself. Eventually, the cost of my meal was deducted—something that should have been done immediately without any hassle. Afterward, I was told over the phone by the owner, Ollie Hester, that I was never welcome to return. Honestly, I never expected it to come to this. Ollie, you need to pay attention to what your chef is serving and stop treating your customers poorly. Remember, the customer is always right. Be cautious if you plan to visit this place—I now have to go to the hospital because I have severe stomach pain and don’t feel well.
The food was exceptional, and the staff were exceptionally welcoming. This restaurant and bar perfectly capture the spirit of traditional Irish hospitality, operated by a family offering a fantastic menu. I will certainly be returning.
I visited Golden Eagle with a large group for a four-course meal. One member of our party requested vegetables without cheese dressing, but it took nearly 15 minutes for them to arrive, and she had to remind the staff about her request. While most of the group had finished their main courses, three of us were still eating chips from a side dish. Despite me informing a male waiter that I was still finishing my chips, he took away my cutlery, which felt unusual. I had to ask him to bring me a fork so I could continue eating. The same happened to the other two people with me. I believe this is basic courtesy, and I found it especially rude given the price we were paying. Overall, the food was decent.
