Contribute FeedbackDespite some negative feedback on the decline in quality over the years, this restaurant seems to have redeeming qualities. The outdoor patio and service were highlights for one customer, while another praised the pan fried chicken. However, there were mixed reviews on items like the gravy and rolls. The ambiance and excellent service were echoed in multiple reviews, with particular praise for the chicken fried steak. While not without its flaws, the food was generally described as delicious, especially the fried chicken and mashed potatoes. The attentive staff, family-like atmosphere, and standout dishes make this restaurant worth a visit.
After a quick drive from Denver came upon a wonderful place to each lunch. Portions of food were really large so there was plenty to eat. Great food and the atmosphere inside was wonderful but the service was outstanding. Our server Dedra was really good and friendly especially with older people. If you go ask for her. The bill was just right and food outstanding enough to bring family again another day for dinner.
We were driving back from our vacation in Santa Fe and decided to stop for dinner on Saturday. The place opens at 4:30, and knew we would get there early and figured we would be first there. There were people already there and waiting to get in. That just tells you how good the place is. The people who serve you are great and so is the food. Many go for the fried chicken, which my wife loves. I like the chicken fried steak myself.
I've been going to Castle Cafe for quite a few years have never been disappointed with anything. The building is historic thank goodness they've maintained its original character. I'm not a fish eater, so I can't comment there. But the buffalo meatloaf, chicken fried chicken chicken fried steak are as good as it gets in Colorado. The soups are homemade (like everything else) are on spot the cream of asparagus is the best I've had, ever. But the real reason to go here is for the pan fried chicken. OMG, my mouth waters just typing pan fried chicken. I swear it's just like my grandma made in her well seasoned cast iron skillet. Oh so crispy on the outside, oh so moist on the inside. There's a fair number of elderly folks that come here with families etc., so they are a bit light on seasoning, but nothing a dash of salt pepper doesn't fix. The pan fried chicken isn't cooked ahead of time stuck under a heat lamp, so if you're not willing to wait the 30 minutes it takes to cook, go to KFC. The mashed potatoes are lumpy with skin on, just the way they should be. If you like mashed potatoes made of flakes from a box, go to Denny's. Homemade Parker rolls are served in a basket covered with a red white cloth napkin just like grandma did. Drenching them with the boat of cracklin' gravy is almost a meal in itself. Ohhh the cracklin' gravy, if I could get away with just guzzlin' a boat or two, I'd die happy be off to clogged artery heaven yes, it's that good! And the service it's like eating at someone's house with family serving you. They are a great group that try their darndest to make your visit a good one. So, if you like good ol' down home homemade cooking, have just a little patience to wait for good food to be prepared after you've ordered it, go to Castle Cafe. If you're an impatient whiny butt sniffler, stay the heck out of my town go eat hummus in LoDo.
I 've never left there hungry. Great food, great service, and if you don 't like something, respectfully bring it up with your server, explain, and they will more than likely take care of it for you. There are too many 'best things I 've had ' to list...but I will say the meatloaf is pretty darn good.
Had the chicken fried steak. I'm a southern boy and I must say was one of the best I've ever had. Gravy was nothing short of spectacular. The servers and manager make you feel like you're at a family members home eating. Very attentive and thoughtful. I'd give this place 6 stars if I could....wait I just did :0)
