Agriturismo Cavria - CASTIONE ANDEVENNO

We literally stumbled on this great local traditional food agriturismo and loved it. The owners are very proud of their valley and the way they make their own food and wine, which, we thought, was wonderful. This is not Chiantishire, so if you are looking for a Barolo, this place is not for you! Otherwise, we fully recommend a visit. Book though! (They take bookings in English if your Italian isn’t up to scratch)

At the beginning of May we had a family meal in this rustic agriturismo in the heart of Valtellina. We were quite a large group and we booked in advance because we knew it was all going to be freshly made there and then in the kitchen. The dining room is very spacious, clean and bathed in natural light. Although the ambience could be somewhat improved, it is simple and far from pretentious. Because of the weather unfortunately we were unable to visit the grounds, which are set in a spectacular location with stunning views of the surrounding Alps. What makes this place well worth a visit is the generosity and genuineness of the food and the hospitality. All hearty mountain dishes including sciatt (cheese balls fritters) and pizzoccheri (buckwheat noodles), freshly handmade in the kitchen. The local cheeses are out of this world and the house wine – which is produced on site- is young but wonderfully scented. The service is gentle and unhurried, the host kind and accommodating.
