Was Ben Konicek at Super J's a mag?
This was one of the best lunches we had on the big island. The portions were really generous and everything was delicious. Our snorkel guide recommended them and it definitely didn't disappoint. Tiny parking lot but worth the trip! View all feedback.

What brent berkemeier dislikes about Super J's:
No atmosphere. Folding tables/chairs for guests inside a dark/dingy building. Food was traditional and claimed to be the best but it is very bland. Not impressed with the food. Service was great and it was fairly priced. View all feedback.

It was the tastiest local food I've eaten on the Big Island! Family run and super friendly. I would love to come back and can only recommend it to everyone

IMO when traveling the formula for a great vacay is meeting new folks, alluring locations, and memorable/tasty foods. Interestingly our friends who had recently been to the Big Island recommended this place. We decided to give it a go. J’s has one of the most spartan menus I’ve seen…it’s like pork chicken (with a few sides desserts) cooked in or with a leafy plant. I wish I could explain better…all I know it was scrumptious! I’d categorize it as uber homemade. While I’ve sampled other Hawaiian foods many times this stood out because of its slow cooked nature its saturation of flavor. These were subtle without any extremes. In ways it felt like sampling a new, tasty wine. After each bite you take a pause and attempt to figure out the taste signature. I’ve traveled the world and have had everything from insect candy to fancy steaks, yet J’s had me pause and wonder in the sensation my tongue just experienced. Expect counter service bus your own dishes in a very charming 3rd world like environment. It felt like your average roadside restaurant you’d find in Thailand or Polynesian. Everything is in your face and organized into a dizzying array of order. In so many ways this added to its charm. It felt authentic. I’m unsure if it was the owner who we met and served us, but she was so friendly. Apparently this place had a number 2 rating on Yelp for best Hawaiian food in the nation. All I know is, it was amazing! I don’t think that rating is far off from the bullseye. The food was prepared in a way I had never experienced. Give it a go and you might be as pleased as I was.

Growing up this was my favorite lau lau shop on island, I miss it so bad. Maui doesn't have laulau this good.

Upon recommendation from a friend we looked for this little restaurant. It is easy to swoop by on this busy atreet. It certainly was worthwhile to stop here! It is not big, just 2 communal seating tables. Since we were in a rush we took it to-go. We had a chicken and a pig laulau and a kalua pig with cabbage (of course! . The later one you see on the picture. The food was very tasty and well done! Definitely a place to remember!

So good. Awesome friendly owners. The lau lau is delicious and filling. We get food here often

Nestled in a humble setting, Super J's captivates diners with its heartwarming atmosphere and authentic Hawaiian cuisine. While the decor may be simplistic, guests rave about the homemade dishes brimming with flavor and love. Known for their succulent Kalua pig and laulau, the generous portions ensure satisfaction without breaking the bank. The warm, familial service creates a welcoming vibe, where staff treat patrons like ohana. Many discover this hidden gem through local recommendations, reaffirming its status as a must-visit culinary destination on the Big Island. For genuine Hawaiian fare and a taste of home, Super J’s is indeed unbeatable.

We were on the big island an entire week. We ate out at least once daily and wanted to sample AUTHENTIC Hawaiian fare. This place is off the charts good! The atmosphere was down home, the wonderful lady that waited on us greeted us like OHANA , in fact all 3 ladies were GREAT. We sampled their entire menu as it is small but EVERYTHING they did was made with love and incredibly good! I would give it 10 stars if I could!

We went out of our way to go here on our son’s recommendation… I’m glad we did! So far it’s the best food we’ve had on the island. Simply amazing everything fresh and soooooo tender. Melt in your mouth good. Not to mention the friendly staff very gracious… they even offered to loan us beach towels after we inquired where they’d recommend to get some because they thought we were just here for the afternoon! You can’t get much friendlier than that. Anyhoo highly recommended … get the food and chit chat just like at your house.

Is 6 stars an option? We pulled up and the sign said “sold out”, and we panicked a bit. Pulled out our phones and started looking for another place to eat, and then this super nice lady comes out and says “I have two more plates left if you want!” We went in, she let us sit even though she was close to closing, the canned juice was amazing and the homemade coconut pudding We wanted to go back again a few days later but they were still sold out! Overall a fantastic experience. Wonderful people service wonderful food. If you get a chance to eat at this authentic Hawaiian restraint, DO IT. (They were also very knowledgeable about allergens and were able to suggest menu items that I could eat gluten free!

Eating our lunch at this place was one of the memorable experiences from our big island trip. This family owned restaurant does not have any fancy set up but offers authentic and tasty Hawaiian food that we were looking for. Apart from the yummy food, we were blown away by the warm hospitality of the people and the genuine affection they showed to our 2.5 yrs old daughter. We would definitely recommend this place.
