Very interesting, very intimate alternative music, food and bar in the heart of Canberra. If you want to see a live, alternative (and always interesting) musical act, have a drink or two and a snack in a tiny, intimate setting with informal lounge chairs, Smiths Alternative is for you. Don't expect a modern, sophisticated venue, or top quality lighting and sound, but it is usually a memorable experience. View all feedback.

Owner was great. Terrific little bar that is sadly run and overtaken by a sad little person that has no people skills and should not be working in hospitality! Would be a great little late night bar if they got rid of the miserable little so and so that thinks she owns the place! View all feedback.
This cafe, bar, and performance venue is my favorite place for various reasons. I appreciate its inclusiveness, versatility, and the sense of community it cultivates. As a performance venue, Smith's hosts a wide range of musical acts, providing opportunities for local artists to showcase their talents through variety shows and open mic jams. The diverse range of musicians and bands that perform creates a unique atmosphere each time I visit. The cafe has a homely feel, with most of its food being freshly baked in-store, including delicious vegan options like peanut butter brownies. The coffee is great, and the baristas are talented. The bar offers house cocktails and a selection of good wines. Smith's is a welcoming and accepting space where people feel comfortable and respected. The presence of a donated piano and other instruments outside reflects the venue's commitment to community, creativity, and accessibility. This place is important to me and many others, and I love watching it evolve with the diverse array of people who pass through its doors.
This restaurant is amazing! I absolutely adore it. The atmosphere is beautiful, with a mix of relaxed folk, hippie, and shabby chic vibes, topped off with a hip and cool touch. They even have a piano outside for anyone to play! Instruments are scattered around inside as well. Nigel and the staff are friendly and easy-going. The music, art, and entertainment they offer is diverse and fantastic. Canberra is fortunate to have such a cultural gem. Go check out Smith's Alternative!
I highly recommend this restaurant for their delicious coffee and freshly baked treats made in-house. They also proudly support and promote Canberra's vibrant original music and arts scene.
Best place for original music, poetry, art and creatives of all sorts in town. Comfy, friendly, great drinks and snacks. Feels like home
