It's a nice restaurant located in the grounds of the former Camperdown Children's Hospital which has now become an upmarket residential area. The place has a sushi bar with both indoor and outdoor seating areas. Food and taste reminds me of the real Japanese flavours. Weenjoyed the eggplant with sweet miso paste, sashimi deluxe and the BBQ chicken. Great staff too! View all feedback.
What Julius P doesn't like about Sushi Masa:
The good: Food is decent enough. Beef takaki was cooked perfectly, sushi was good, although a bit limited to kingfish, scampi, salmon. The tempura was also good. The saki was served cold at a good temperature, we had Dassai 50 and an Australian made sparkling sake which was actually pretty decent. The bad: Service is atrocious. The waitresses are not trained and keep their heads down oblivious to the many customers t... View all feedback.
Waited a long time to be seated, they seemed overwhelmed despite not being overly packed. Once seated the service was very polite and friendly, and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. Good tonkatsu and udon.
In the corner by the entrance sits a sushi counter. I love sushi counters. Sushi ought to be eaten at a sushi counter...<br/ <br/ ...but I'm with my family now and the kids need a place to sit. The waitress is very accommodating and helps us to our table. It's a nice little place, well designed with large windows and simple decor. I note the daily specials on the wall and the karaage tuna and kisu tempura both catch my eye. Maybe next time though as we have already settled on our orders the lunchtime sushi set for $15.50 – sushi, salad, agedashi tofu and miso soup. This should be good.<br/ <br/ I enjoy the entree dishes first. My wife comments that the salad is nice (and it is) but that the dressing is quite strong. It seems that I am going to need a lot of ginger to remove the taste before I move on to the sushi. It's okay, we're eating a lunch set though I do take a peek at the counter.<br/ <br/ The sushi arrives. It looks nice though I am thinking that the plate is a tad large. The stars of the show, all eight pieces plus rolls, look a bit lonely sitting on it. But it's okay, it's just a lunch set. I glance over at the counter...<br/ <br/ I begin with the snapper whose texture I almost miss. I'm thinking to myself that I would like to try this one ala carte one evening. I try the fatty tuna. It’s nicely formed and thick but alas, no melt. The salmon tastes basic and the aburi salmon has a quick singe of flavour to it but not much going on in the way of fat. Going through the rest of the pieces the prawn, flying fish roe, egg, eel and tuna salmon rolls I am thinking to myself, not to worry, it's only a lunch set.<br/ ..<br/ <br/ ...I steal another glance at the counter.<br/ <br/ Next time, I'm going ala carte.
We had a pretty decent meal at Sushi Masa. The service was alright, but one thing that was really strange was that we were only given one menu to share between three. When I asked for another menu, the waitress told us that there wasn't enough to go around (say what? The restaurant was almost empty when we went! . So that was pretty strange. Anyway, we decided on some sashimi and hot food. Waiting time was pretty decent. The sashimi came first and it was really fresh and yummy! The duck udon was great as well, really different to the usual soup stock. However the noodles were a bit over cooked and soft. The tonkatsu was really nice too! It was probably the dish I enjoyed the most. The meat were cooked and fried well- really moist on the inside yet crispy on the outside! The only letdown was the serving size. It was really small and wasn't really worth the price of $14. The chicken karaage was pretty average. Anyway, it was a pleasant meal all in all. The prices were quite reasonable too (except for the tonkatsu !
This sushi restaurant is one of our go-to spots that we frequent regularly. It's not just because it's conveniently located below our apartment, but because the sushi here is incredibly fresh and delicious! Each sushi plate is made to order, so there may be a bit of wait time, but the relaxed and casual atmosphere makes it worth it. The portions are on the smaller side, but the quality makes up for it. It's a BYO restaurant and on most weeknights, you can easily walk in without a reservation. However, weekends may require booking ahead. I highly recommend trying the eggplant dish - it's a bit oily but incredibly tasty, as well as all of their sushi and sashimi options.
We were really hoping this restaurant would be a good local Japanese option so we wouldn't have to go to Surry Hills or the CBD for Japanese food. The food was decent - the sushi was fresh and delicious, and the yakitori was perfectly cooked and seasoned. However, the service was shockingly bad. When we arrived, there was another couple waiting who looked agitated and had been waiting for a long time. The waitresses seemed more focused on cleaning tables than attending to the guests waiting by the door. We stood there for over 10 minutes without any staff acknowledging us, and another couple behind us ended up leaving. The waitresses were nice but extremely inattentive, making it difficult to get their attention. The poorly trained staff really ruined the dining experience for us. Despite the good food, the service was so bad that we almost left hungry. Overall, this restaurant may be a good option for lunch with decent lunch boxes or ramen, but it may not be the best choice for a date night with a nice ambiance.
