Smithy's Restaurant Wine Bar - Camden
Smithy's Restaurant Wine Bar
Description
Located at the end of a cobbled street in King's Cross, this dimly-lit Victorian den retains the character of its former life as a blacksmith's. Original cobbled stone floors and large Victorian gas heaters add to the historical charm. The menu offers a fantastic selection of Modern European dishes, with highlights including seared scallops with chorizo and pea puree for starters, and a delicious Cote de Boeuf with Béarnaise sauce to share. Be sure to try the daily specials, which always live up to their name.

This place was recommended by a friend and looked beautiful on her website. but the reality was really disappointing. the interior of the site is urgently required by a redesign/renovation. it is really playing on the history and the original use of the building that is beautiful to show, but I don't want to feel like it in a stable seat at stands and with a paved floor! the waiter was then quite rude all night and to complete it, eating was then really disappointing. a really chewing and tasteless rib eye steak (n.b the menu on its website is not up to date) we will not spin back.
The atmosphere on Friday night was far too noisy to enjoy a pleasant dinner or have a conversation, particularly in the section near the bar where the music was blaring. Additionally, several items from the already limited menu were unavailable, and the service left much to be desired. I also found it to be pricier than I anticipated, considering it feels more like a bar than a restaurant.
Converted from stables, Smithy's boasts a wonderful atmosphere and character that perfectly complements its food. The menu is straightforward yet executed flawlessly. We started with delicious garlic-stuffed mushrooms and salt and pepper squid, which made for excellent appetizers. For the main courses, the battered haddock and seared scallops were both impressive choices. Our meal was paired with a lovely organic Verdecchio, all at very reasonable prices. The restaurant's location in a quiet backstreet allowed us to relax in the bar and enjoy a couple of drinks afterward, even on a Saturday evening.
This restaurant came highly recommended by a friend, and its website made it look appealing. Unfortunately, my experience fell far short of expectations. The interior desperately needs a redesign or refurbishment; while it's clear they're trying to honor the building's history, I don't want to feel like I'm dining in a stable with stalls and a cobblestone floor! To make matters worse, the waiter was quite rude throughout our visit, and the food did not live up to our hopes either. I ordered a ribeye steak that was both tough and bland (and by the way, the menu on their website is outdated). Overall, we won't be in a hurry to return.
I work very close to here, usually have work dinners/meetings at St Pancras. As I this is (very) close I decided to give it a try. The service was a slow and part of my starter was missing they did not charge me for this, which I appreciate; this was more than I expected and a sign that they care. For the main I had the fish and chips and the batter was far too thick and greasy the overwhelming flavour was of the cooking fat. The fish within it was actually great, a really nice piece of fish let down by the batter and cooking. Overall as it is close to work, I will go again, but I would not make a detour to go here unless my experience was a one off. We will see.
