After a challenging period, it seems the Dicky Steel is wholeheartedly embracing its role as a cherished local venue.
What an amazing place a real find! Warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Roast beef and cauliflower cheese were immense. Thank you!
Just absolutely one of the best welcoming places I’ve been. Staff really helpful. What a great atmosphere and building. Thank you for great service etc.
Tripadvisor is way out of touch on this one. I haven't been because it has been closed for around 6 weeks and hasn't been a proper pub for years before that. It was bought before the lockdown by venture capitalists who seemed to discourage the old locals and the friendly atmosphere, beer and decor of what was once a great pub. The rumour was that they were trying to get the licence removed so that they could convert to a lucrative flat project. However, thay were only partially successful and now it has been bought by the father of the old landlord who promises to return it to a friendly community pub. It will reopen shortly so give it your full support.
We came in for drinks but I saw the menu and thought some chips would be nice. “The kitchen isn’t open yet” was the polite reply. This begs the question why are menus out in that case, but let’s leave that aside. Fair enough we’ll wait. Just then what should appear but several cooked meals! So the kitchen was open. I said “So, I can order chips?” Reply “I will let you know when you can”. To be fair about 15 minutes later the barmaid came round to my table and took my order. They arrived and they were fine. I was asked whether I wanted any sauce, and I requested ketchup. A few minutes later she returned to say they didn’t have any ketchup. I mean, come on, what pub or restaurant that sells burgers and chips doesn’t have ketchup?! Ok, mayonnaise please. And what turned up? One measly little sachet of mayonnaise. I dared not ask for more. The one real ale on tap was in poor condition so I switched to the ice cold “IPA”. As we left, I spotted two of my fellow diners starting their burger and chips meal. I couldn’t help noticing that they both had on the side of their meals little dishes of ketchup … This was nothing short of farcical. Maybe they just didn’t like me, but I suggest it is more likely that they simply don’t know what they’re doing. Not a great pub, to say the least.
5th week in a row having their Sunday lunch. Really beautiful, tasty food, with large portions — and very reasonably priced. Staff are super friendly and helpful. The Steeles is now privately owned by a wonderful chap named Steve, and he's making a real go of it.
