ANJU - Calgary
ANJU
Description
The restaurant offers Korean fusion cuisine in a tapas style, perfect for sharing small plates. While the poke and halibut were good, there were issues with substitutions and slow service. The cleanliness of the bathroom was a concern for one guest, and the food quality was underwhelming for some during brunch. However, the attentive service, delicious food, and accommodating staff redeemed the dining experience for others. Overall, it is a warm and inviting spot with superb food and BYOB option, making it a great local favorite.

Anju is a great atmosphere for a smaller group of friends. The decor is simple, but yet perfect for 17th ave. My friends and I had gone on a Sunday evening after work, when trying to make a reservation online, the only times available were really late (9pm only). This was disappointing, considering when we walked in there was clearly a lot more tables open; I understand that a lot of restaurants have certain tables for reservation but we were sat at the window. Now it would have been fine if it wasn't patio season, but the way the window "table" was set up I ended up looking and watching someone eating the entire time.. (as much as I was trying not to). However the whole reason why we come to Anju is for the Crispy Tofu.. the tofu is cooked perfectly so its not rubber and the flavour between the "special sauce" and the sesame oil is to die for!! Normally that fills me up, but my friends also order the KFC sliders, the sauce on them is just right between the spice and the flavour. The only complaint I have is that we literally were waiting about 20 minutes between the Crispy Tofu and the KFC Sliders.. But overall would go back just for the Crispy Tofu.
My son and I decided to try this place while my wife was off on holidays. Located on a busy and amid a lot of very good dining places on 17th Ave, this restaurant comes highly regarded and with good reason. When trying a new place, we typically go for the small sharing plates since this gives us the chance to see how wide the kitchen's expertise spreads. So, we started with an order of kimchi (this is a Korean fusion place so the spicy cabbage national dish is a must, and it is not very spicy at all.We also had the fried brussels (superb), mushroom tempura (my favourite), crispy tofu (my son loved it) and the squid fried rice. This last was the most spicy dish and had a range of squid tenderness from crispy to just right. We also had a sesame brulee for dessert.. this last was the weakest dish of all and not at all recommended to you, the reader. Not cheap, but an interesting and tasty experience. If the idea of Korean fusion interests you, then by all means, try this place.
SOOOO YUMMY! I am celiac and there were lots of options for me! We decided to get an appy and I'm so glad we did - the brussel sprouts were absolutely incredible
We had a wonderful weekend outing with friends or a date. The food was excellent.
Despite the uncertain future, I had a wonderful experience dining here. I visited for lunch and enjoyed a variety of delicious dishes, including fantastic sharing plates. The Tiger Prawn was especially amazing, and the Poke bowl provided a great dining experience. The ribs had a flavorful taste, but were slightly tough. On Tuesdays, they offer spicy Salmon Tacos as a special, making it a great day to visit. Each day, they feature a different special, and the one offered during my visit was excellent.
