The innovative menu showcases dishes like seafood etouffee and Korean pancakes, delighting visitors with fresh and unique flavors. The owners, Courtney and Terrance, are charming hosts who provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests. The stunning ocean views, combined with delicious food and cold beer, make this restaurant the perfect stop for travelers exploring the remote beauty of Newfoundland. Whether you're in the area for a day trip or a longer stay, Grates Cove Studios promises a culinary experience that is truly special.
We initially overlooked Open Studio when searching for restaurants to try during our travels, but we are thankful we gave it a second look. This restaurant in Grates Cove impressed us in every way. The blend of the owners' Louisiana and Newfoundland backgrounds resulted in tasty and unique dishes. The menu may be short, but each item is innovative. We savored the Seafood Étouffée, a generous bowl filled with shrimp, cod, and scallops in a flavorful broth over rice, topped with snow crab. The Dirty Rice, a combination of ground pork and rice with breaded and fried cod, was also a hit. Dining with a stunning bay view and chatting with the owners about the area added to the special experience. Open Studio is a culinary gem that is definitely worth a visit, especially since they also offer vacation homes in Grates Cove.
The food at this restaurant was fantastic! I was pleasantly surprised by the gourmet dishes and delicious meal. The property also has 2 cottages available for rent, which I would love to stay in.
My husband and I finally made it to St. John's and decided to go on a lovely day trip along the Baccalieu Trail. We were warmly greeted by Courtney at the restaurant, even though we didn't have reservations on a Monday. I always order the Korean Pancake, but this time we also tried the cod boulettes, lobster pizza, and shrimp jambalaya. We also stocked up on my favorite Sea Weed creams and purchased a beautiful purpleheart cooking utensil. Our day trip was absolutely wonderful.
This is a great restaurant...please see my review under Grate's Cove Studios. I love the restaurant and the food is delicious.
Delicious food, wonderful location. If you are in St. John's, totally worth a two hour drive for great food and a beautiful place :
