Max's - Burlingame
Max's
Description
Max's offers a mixed dining experience that straddles the line between comfort and mediocrity. Highlighted by delicious items like Potato Skins and Fajitas, many dishes fall short, with inconsistent flavors and some quality concerns. While the friendly staff enhances the experience, the ambiance feels dated and the service lacks attention to detail. Pricing may feel steep for the quality received, with some offerings, such as the pastrami sandwich, highlighting inconsistencies. Nevertheless, the happy hour menu and standout dishes keep it a strong contender for casual bites, though not without its flaws.

This restaurant is fantastic! The food is excellent, the atmosphere is delightful, and our waitress, Nicole, was exceptional. With a history dating back to 1978, this place has a lot to offer. Its location is very convenient, just a few steps from our hotel, the Holiday Inn Express. I definitely recommend this spot for dining in, taking out, or simply enjoying a drink and a warm smile.
The food tastes great, though a bit pricey. The steak is excellent—perfectly sized, tender, and juicy. The pasta we ordered was also delicious. They have a special menu every Thursday, and there's plenty of parking available.
I stopped by just for dessert one day, and the brownie with a scoop of ice cream was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend checking this place out. It seems to be a favorite among the locals based on what I observed.
I hadn't visited this location in over twelve years, but I used to be a big fan of Max's Opera Cafe in San Francisco. The wait staff was exceptional, contributing to a wonderful birthday dinner for my mother, complete with a complimentary birthday sundae. The Turkey Club sandwich was tasty, and the salad was good as well. However, the shrimp in the shrimp cocktail lacked flavor and appeared off-color, and the cocktail sauce tasted like it came from a jar. But hey, nothing's perfect! The live jazz on a Monday evening was fantastic, and the atmosphere in the bar/restaurant was lively and enjoyable. I plan to return for a simple sandwich dinner with another alcohol-free beer and to enjoy the jazz again.
I ordered two sandwiches while staying at a nearby hotel: the turkey club and the pastrami sandwich. The turkey club was decent, but the pastrami sandwich was inedible. It was dark brown and tasted like the meat was stale and just reheated. I highly recommend avoiding the pastrami sandwich. Additionally, the restaurant's customer service was lacking, and the food quality wasn't what I remembered from Max's. I won’t be dining in or getting takeout again. It's disappointing, but it's just not worth it.
