Never thought I?d write this about a brunch, but I?m convinced the food here tastes like love. The biscuits were crispy on the outside and soft and airy on the inside, with a deliciously tangy homemade strawberry jam. The amazing mess an unassuming eggand sausage sandwich had this amazing homemade pork sausage with a unique blend of herbs. And the crab corn cake was moist, flavorful, and light. The chef herself came by our table several times to talk to us about the food, and everyone else workinghere was equally attentive and kind. Definitely my favorite brunch place in Brooklyn the attention to detail and quality shows.
I typically don 't write reviews. However, several times throughout my meal, my boyfriend and I were passive aggressively badgered about writing a review because the restaurant had been flagged on Yelp and Google for potentially fraudulent reviews. (This admission was one red flag of many). Ultimately, this was such a wholly unpleasant experience that I 'm still thinking about it months later. As such, I will oblige. We arrived at 2pm on a Sat (Sept 2022). As we approached, it looked like the place was closed--lights out. We walked in and noticed there was no a/c or music on and the dining area was blocked. I told my boyfriend that we should just leave. But for convenience 's sake (shame on us), we yelled into the abyss, hello? No response. As we turned to leave, a server walked out from the back. First red flag. We each filled in their Covid contact tracing survey and were seated. My boyfriend ordered a cocktail (which took about 15-20 mins even though the place was empty). He sipped and said something about the flavor was weird. I tried it and agreed something was really off. (Typically, rum, OJ and pineapple juice are hard to botch, but this place somehow managed it). We didn 't bother ordering anymore drinks. Second red flag. At this point, the owner came out to greet us. She seemed kind if a little over zealous the first time she checked in on us. Little did we know, we would be subject to about five more increasingly uncomfortable check ins from both her and the server. The check ins were repetitive resume run downs and (not so) humble brags letting us know that so many people love the place and the staff 's thoughts about what makes the food so good. These monologues were always followed by a passive aggressive fish for a compliment or cosign on the deliciousness of the food or the uniqueness of the place (both of which are lacking). Within minutes of each other, the owner and the server each checked in on us again while we 're looking over the menu and told us that their fan favorite biscuits were just put in the oven and would be ready in 6 minutes. About 5 minutes later, the server came out again and said 3 more minutes on the biscuits. After about a total of 15 minutes passed, we were each given a small, complimentary drop biscuit that was a little larger than the size of a clementine. It was crispy and there was a subtle flavor that we couldn 't quite identify. The homemade jam was good, but nothing to write home about. We both decided to order their best selling crab eggs benedict. The owner had come by to check on us again after the biscuits and her description of the dish made it seem like it included a cornbread cake (replacing the quintessential English muffin). It turned out the crab meat was mixed with cornbread mix. Ultimately, we felt that the naming was misleading since the ingredients were plopped on top of lettuce and there was no bread to speak of. Additionally, despite the staff 's insistence that everything is made fresh, the corn (in the avocado corn salsa) tasted like it was canned. The dish was also drenched in a house sauce that was (not hollandaise, but) something quite unappetizing. On top of this, portions were small and we were still hungry after attempting to eat around the sauce. Also, strangely, everything was served on plastic plates, cups, etc. Third red flag. At this point we 're underwhelmed, but still very hungry. I then order one single biscuit to tide me over and was told I would be charged $4-for a single biscuit. I almost didn 't order it due to sticker shock but went ahead. Ten minutes later, I was brought 2 biscuits. This when our downhill experience picked up velocity and flew off a cliff. When we received two biscuits I interpreted that as one ORDER. I knew I should have clarified in the moment, but we didn 't want to risk sitting through another uncomfortable lecture about handmade uniquenes
