Cafe 042 - Brandon
Cafe 042
Description
Tucked behind an unassuming exterior, this small Mexican spot polarizes diners: its seasoned chips and salsa and generous, affordable portions draw loyal fans who praise authentic flavors, daily specials and friendly staff, while others complain of bland queso, occasional menu shortages, slow service and building issues like odors and water-stained ceilings. Best for casual lunches, takeout and flavor-seekers willing to overlook rough edges, it offers strong highlights but inconsistent execution.

The fries were country-style—soft but flavorful. I’d suggest cooking them in two stages for an even better texture. The hush puppies, on the other hand, didn’t contain any onion, which I felt could have added some moisture (perhaps minced onion or whole grain would work well). Nevertheless, they were still quite tasty. Overall, we enjoyed our experience and will definitely come back. Just a quick note: the sidewalk and street conditions were not great, as it seems the city hadn't been up to par with maintenance this week.
I absolutely love this restaurant! The food is excellent and they offer a different menu every day of the week. I enjoyed a generous portion and everything was spotless. The staff were attentive and friendly. I highly recommend this place! I just wish they were open in the evenings as well.
Bowtie Chicken Pasta is UNBELIEVABLE! In my opinion, the prices are great for what you get. These ppl put time and effort into what they do. It is not a few skillful/frozen precooked special, that is as real and as fresh as it gets. So compared to anywhere different for hot, fresh and much she got it for a good price if u want McDonald's prices go to McDonald's bc that is worth it!!!
The restaurant has a terrible odor like old fish. The salsa taste like what I can buy at Walmart. The entree I got was ok. I wanted fajitas, waitress says they are out.
I have been a patron of Cafe Azteca since they were situated in the back of Overby's Antiques. After that building burned down and they relocated, I continued to visit. Even though I moved away for 17 years, I returned for a visit as soon as I came back. The food is still amazing! While prices have increased since the early '90s, that seems to be the case everywhere. Their salsa and chips are the best I have ever tasted, and they truly serve the best Mexican food in the Jackson Metroplex. Whenever work brings me this way, I always make sure to grab takeout!
