What User doesn't like about The Grouse Inn:
Arrived before 5 so the lunchtime men was still available perfect as smaller portions than on full menu. Steak, mushroom and ale pie all round with male in party ordering from full menu and females ordering from lunch menu. Still struggled to eat it all and a medley of desserts to follow one dessert shared by all an excellent end to a good day out! View all feedback.
We requested a quiet table and were placed at a table for two tightly squeezed between two other tables so no privacy. Why do restaurants do that? To be fair they let us sit at another table. The starter (blooming onion with bacon and cheese) was way too salty and bereft of cheese. Our main arrived 1 hour and 45 minutes after taking up our table. After a long wait I had asked a young waitress if all was well, she said she 'd go and find out, went into the kitchen then ignored us afterward. I asked a more mature waitress the same question and she said I 'll go and kick their a**es that was not the professional reply I was expecting. The mains were disappointing (possibly rushed in the end)....haddock with soggy batter on the inside. When asked what caused the delay the reply was they had a big party on a another table . This was rubbish as other tables that arrived after us were served before us. They just screwed our order up and we didn 't even get an apology.
Fantastic pub grub overlooking the beautiful surrounding countryside. I'd recommend booking in advance as it was busy when we arrived (2pm Saturday). The waitress was friendly and accommodating, and took good care of our coeliac daughter's gluten free needs (chef even cooked up a mix of things at the waitress' request see photo of gluten free chicken cheese burger). Food was excellent and good value. We'll definitely be returning!
We arrived to be told there was no one booked in with our name. Then we were asked if it might be under a wrong name? How would we know. They decided maybe we were under a wrong name so we could go to a table. After waiting an eternity our food finally arrived. Steak heavily coated in salt, steak pie dry and tough, tipsy chicken cold, side salad was just a few leaves looking as though it was a rabbits left overs. Diet Pepsi sent back twice as flat and strange taste to first one. We could have sent the meals back but then would have had to wait another eternity and we were so hungry it was easier to leave it. No one even asked us if we had enjoyed our meal. Dessert order taken after we had to ask, we had waited 35 minutes after being given the dessert menus. We stopped visiting The Grouse due to the last time being of a poor standard but was told it had improved. Shame we listened. Yes we could have sent the meals back, but then we would have waited another eternity. Yes we could have argued the food wasn’t worth it but we understand you need to make a living. You said your chef did his best, maybe he did, but that isn’t helpful, it doesn’t change the poor service and food. In a nut shell, we won’t be back. Two chances were enough. Other people may have had better experiences it’s just a shame that a pub we used to go to a lot has really gone down hill in our eyes.
Always delicious food, staff are super friendly and efficient. Would recommend!
